if you need to change i tire, might want to spend the money for all 4 if the tread wear is more than 25%
the dealers usually will look at measurements of the treads. The reason why it's a big deal is because if you are too far off, then you have different diameters in tire size. Therefore it puts stress on the drivetrain (differentials and eventually, tranny). That's why it's a big deal. Dealerships are not going to forewarn you of this because it could be a loss of a sale due to maintenance costs.
i know it has been addressed befor, but i thought i would bring it up again

You also have to make sure the pressure is the same, something like 34lbs in the front and 32lbs in the back.
I'm actually currently saving for tires, should I go for Nitto 555's? The tire salesman is trying to sell me into his "Hankuk" tire... its only 89 bucks a tire and he says they are just as good.
Anybody have any suggestions?

Hankook tires are pretty good if you buy the right ones, but $89 tires are not going to be performance tires, maybe decent all weather rubber.
My brother-in-law had some on his SRT4 before it was totaled, he liked them better than the factory ones.

The 450's that are on them get pretty good mileage, plus they are all weather. Keep in mind that I purchased them in Michigan. If I were to get new tires I would have gone with the 555's because you only need about two season tires here. :D When ever you get 30K out of performace tires you are doing pretty well. They may not be the best, but you tend to run your tires until they are drag radials  :D , so I think that they would be good for you. Faded might be right about the 555's, I have never had them.

Definitely replace all 4. When I got a flat in one of the fronts, I just got the 2 fronts done ( I didn't know that all 4 should be replaced on a AWD vehicle). A week later the road was a little wet from some rain, and I spun out, even though I was only going like 25 mph. Ended up barely hitting some guardrail, but it hit where everything meets in the front corner and ended up being $5000 in damage.

Honestly, there's not that much lee-way allowed by Subaru. I don't remember the exact spec, but I do know it is supposed to be on the order of a half or quarter inch rolling circumference (if that's the right term). Meaning the tires on the ground, in terms of distance traveled per revolution, can't differ than more than a half or quarter inch. I'm sure Opie will correct me on the spec, I don't have my service manual handy ;)

I've been pleasantly suprised at the Falken GRB FK-451's that I have now. I bought them because they were cheap ($105 ea for 245/45-17) and ended up becoming a fan of them. They are rated at 280 wear/AA traction/A temp. Search around on NASIOC and see how many positive reviews they get. Before these I had always bought BF Goodrich. I cant justify paying for the BFG's anymore after how well these perform. I have about 7k miles on them now and they still look brand new.

According to Ss it's 2/32". Or so he said when he was mildly reprimanding moi for my tires.

Freak man I have two different tires on my car both are 225/45/17( I know it's ghetto), but the places I went to didn't have sumitomo's. They said that I should be fine.
these (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=BFGoodrich&model=g-Force+Sport&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&partnum=145ZR7GFSP)
and these (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Sumitomo&model=HTR+Z+II&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&partnum=145WR7HTRZ2)
The width is off by .2", the overall diameter is the same 25", and the revs per mile are off by 10. Do you think I could damage my differetials? Also I still have more than 50% tread on all 4 tires.

I run Falken 451's they are very good tires in the dry and the wet.
Decent price too.

That might be the actual tyre diameter difference. In terms of rolling circumference, it would equate to more.
I did do some searching, and came up with 1/4" in circumference difference. There were also a few references to tread depth difference between tires, but nothing really common between most of those comments. 2/32" to 7/32" tread depth difference were the most common cited.
