i tried both oils out and i like the motul better. the royal purple seemed to be thinner and burn a little quicker. i put the motul back in it today and it seems smoother than the royal purple. anyone else tried these oils out? what was your experience with the different oils?

I use RP, but have used Motul. Both are good. I don't know if one is better than the other.

I am having a problem with Mobil One burning too quick, I'll have to check the Motul out, which weight do you run?

i had a friend tell me to try mobil one 15w 50, he says a heavier weight wont burn as fast

Yes but more friction loss and worse gas mileage with a thicker oil.

John, to be fair, your car is visibly smoking. I do not think that oil brand will change that, or going to a heavier weight.

As for weights, I run Mobil 1, 5w30 in the winter (like, the 3 months it gets "cold" down here) and 10w30 all other times. I'm going to try RP or Motul for my next Dragon trip (after the one coming up) and see if I burn less over the course of the trip.

any blue smoke is bad. meaning its burning oil. rings arent sealing very well

I had mastro check it out right before the warranty was over, they told me everything was great on it. I have had a wee bit of smoke for well over a year now. I think its bill at mastro said a little oil makes it past the oil rings and thats normal.

Well since I put in 10w30 oil (from north carolina to here) I haven't had a problem, I honestly think it was the weight of the oil, plus I have a bad habit of pedal to the metal. (Bill told me when you floor it some oil sneaks by)

only one fur sure way to tell. compression and leakdown test. i put out 23.5psi and no smoke:dunno:

Yeah thats what they said about my old car when it started using 1qt per 1k. Then they said comp of 125 was normal too.......
I just thought thats cause they tuned it but now? Jonh, did they tune yours too?

ive talked with HKS about it and it looks like he may do a compression and leakdown test to get real results. that will tell all.

Well then I would bet that what ever tests they perform will come out "normal" ;)

How 'bout we let him watch the compression test and leakdown test being performed so he can see the readings we are getting and then we can pull out the service manuals to see what the proper tolerences are for each test and compare them to the results. Then he can see if it comes out "normal" for himself. Anyone who is interested in getting a compression and/or leakdown test performed is more than welcome to watch it being performed and see the results for themselves.

On a turbo car oil can get into the combustion chamber from some other places than just getting past the rings (and all cars allow a very small amount of oil to get past the rings on each stroke of the piston, this is normal)...it can also come from the turbo itself (bad internal seals from the oil passages) and through the PCV system (clogged or stuck PCV valve) to name a few. So you can have a car that passes the leakdown and compression tests yet still burns oil.

...also on the turbocharged 2.0 and 2.5 liter engines, Subaru's acceptable oil loss is up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles. The harder you run it...the quicker it'll burn it. From personal experiance RP dissappears much, much more quickly than any other oil I've seen.

Click here for info regarding the compression test, and acceptable tolerences. This is from the service manual for the 2004 Impreza WRX & STi 2.0 & 2.5 DOTC Engines (Dual Overhead, Turbo Charged). (http://www.subaruchallenge.com/Wills/04CompTest.pdf)
Standard = 142psi - 171psi per cylinder
Limit: no less than 128psi per cylinder
Difference between cylinders: Less than 7psi

Click here for info regarding the engine troubleshooting, see Section #9 - "Excessive Engine Oil Consumption" (Page 4) for the possible causes as per the service manual for the 2004 Impreza WRX & STi 2.0 & 2.5 DOTC Engines (Dual Overhead, Turbo Charged). (http://www.subaruchallenge.com/Wills/EngineTroubleshooting.pdf)
Possible causes include:
Intake System: Loosened or cracked PCV hose, defective PCV valve, Loose oil cap.
Compression: Defective Valve Stem, worn or stuck rings, cylinder or piston. (These would be ruled out by a passing compression test).
Lubrication system: Loosened oil pump attaching bolts, defective oil filter o-ring, defective crank seal, defective valve cover gasket, loose or defective oil drain plug or gasket, loose oil pan fitting bolts or defective oil pan.

And like you said hereVVVVVV

The thing speaks for it's self. I never ment to imply that any thing would be fudged. But My results where 125/135 which fails on both counts and I was FLAT OUT TOLD THAT WAS NORMAL AND WITHIN IN TOL. That and burning 1qt per 1k.
Oh yeah then my car was sold without that being remedied. Oh well I'm just a disgruntled former employee
Oh and before anyone flies off here; I have the copies of the test results as they came off the service dept printer.

This is true too. Running the Dragon for a weekend will cause my car to burn about a quart of oil, what with all that engine braking and high rpm running.

I really didn't mean to start a big whoopdie-doo over John's smoking car! :-o

If I owned a compression gauge I would do it for free for you myself... :D

The tech's aren't so charitable  , according to the Mitchell time guide here are the charges for compression tests:
2.0L - $192.00 (2.4 hours)
2.5L - $96.00 (1.2 hours)
add a leak-down test for either motor for $40.00 additional.
