well, we got the motor out today. i picked up my front shocks the other day and i picked up new paint for the car today. so i have everything i need to get the job done. i'm just having the engine bay painted with the new color for now. the rest of the car is going to have to wait for paint. i'm going with a hair darker green. it has a little more blue in it.
as you can see the engine bay is a mess. but everything is geting painted and detailed out before the new motor goes in.

I felt sooooooooooooooooo much better opening my hood after I did that. It took me the better part of 10 months to do what I thought would take 3. I didn't plan out the money situation to well for parts. And it was more than double what I thought it would be, but it is so worth it. Got your back pills stocked up?

After seeing the paint job of other car you posted a while back, yours is sure to look good! Too bad he doesn't do other jobs.
I just did my engine compartment myself. I did it in my garage when I was in high school. I used Rust-O-Leum (sp) satin black I think . I masked off everything and did a couple coats. Suprisingly it still looks good. It's nice to open the hood and have the bay look as nice as the car itself.

i wish i could of gotten away with painting it black with a paint can. i would of done it a long time ago. lisa's cars engine bay is painted black. but it really stands out because i've never seen a amc with a black engine bay when the car isn't black. so needless to say her's is getting painted too when we put her new motor in.

ya, she did. i take it she talk to you. she said you where really help full and a nice guy. thanks for taking the time out to help :) i got the part. i ordered it from napa the day before and then the next day they said tampa couldn't find it and it would take 4 days to get it from KS. that's when we started calling around. so i called the next day to make sure it was really coming and they said it came in form tampa yesterday :whoa: napa said they only had 3 sets. 1 in tampa, CA,KS. i ordered another set from KS too. napa was the only place i could find it. well a amc parts place had them but wanted 109 buck each for it and the lower spring pearch :whoa: it still would of took 4 days. i paid 35 bucks each from napa :)
the bushing really wheren't that bad but you have to take everything off to replace them. i've got a lot of new parts going into the car :)
my friend is doing a really nice job too :) but then again he better he's getting my harley in trade for the work.

Well I really did'nt help out too much. She must have called here first, and I suggested she try one of the older AMC/Jeep dealers that still had the 74 catalogs. I can get whats available from Mopar, but no books to look them up. After I hung up I started thinking maybe......
Anyways if you need something in the future let me know and I'll call oneof the AMC degenerates I know and get a part number and hook you up.

dano, i called before she did. did i talk to you. the guy said he would call me back after he saw if the micro film viewer worked. said it hadn't been used in 5 years.
i took a pick of the motor today. i couldn't talk myself into spending 300 bucks for valve covers. so it has cheep ones on for now. but i'm getting a set of nice ones for 80 bucks when they come out in november.

It must have been another dealer. We have no books or micro film for those. I'm under what used to be called the "Old Oak Tree" (it was a sad day a few weeks ago when it finally had to come down). The paint on that block looks great.

well nothing got done on my car last week. i had today and yesterday off. nothing got done yesterday. today we put the motor in and then it had to come back out because the toqure converter wouldn't fit into the crank. pulled it back out and got that fixed and put it back in. then i noticed the motor mounts where on upside down :wtf: he said he thought the person that put the old motor in had put them upside down and he put the the right way. so the motor had to get jacked up to change the mounts around. while putting the motor back down he used a prybar between the crossmember and the oil pan to shift the motor. needless to say i have a nice dent in my oil pan now  i'm getting really stressed out.

Looks great. Never fails that something shows up just when you think its ready. After going though mine I took it out on its first test drive, got 1/2 mile from the shop and lost oil pressure and developed unwanted engine noise. Towed it back to the shop and found that 2 of the valve's stuck and two bent push rods. The machine shop didn't size two of the guides correctly. I got lucky the pistons and cam were ok. I grabbed a couple of old valves off another head lying around and went for round two.

thanks, when i called ati and gave them the motor info. i guy said in a surprised voice " that motor is going to make around 500lbs of torque" i said it better ;) i think he was suprised because the cam is so small. that cam has a nice flat torque curve. it should be a blast to drive. i think it only needs a 2500 stall.
727 trans with a ati treemaster 3200 10inch stall, a ford 9 inch with 3.70 gears and nitto 275/50/15's

update. i'm pissed. ok last week i had no oil pressure. the guy forgot to put the front oil plugs in. well i spent all day fixing his messup. today i went to prime the oil pump and guess what. no oil pressure. i guess he forgot the oil plugs under the intake too. this really sucks.

update, the oil plugs where missing under the intake. we got that fixed and I'VE GOT OIL PRESSURE :-o i just finshed everything and all i have to do now is prime the carb :) i'm going to wait until tomorrow so the gasket sealer on the intake has time to setup. tomorrrows the big day :mullet: i've been waiting 22 months for this day. i hope all goes well.

Hopefully thats the last setback the motor gives you. I will say that after fixing my engine problem I wasn't out of trouble. I took it out on the second test drive and one of the spring retainers popped off the 3-4 shift lever. So limped back to the shop in second gear. On the third test drive I took it home and lost the rear u-joint on 66th st. Freaking car had more miles on the back of a tow truck after I worked on it, than I drove it.

i asked a few friends if i need to pull the driveshaft to tow my car on a tow dolly? they said no. today i towed it 35-40 miles each way with the drive shaft in. 50+ mph. the i was looking something up to night and saw not to tow it over 30mph and not more than 50 miles. god i hope i didn't fry my trans., i feel sick

My uncle towed his s-10 from Michigan and left his d/s in. He kept the motor running the whole time it was in tow. I would maybe drain and fill it, those transmissions are pretty foregiving to abuse.

with the motor running you have fluid pumping around. trans was spinning dry for 80 miles at around 50 mph. i got it running and it did move on it's own. but i just pulled it into the driveway. but it went into all gears. i haven't test drove it. i'm getting a exhaust this weeks.
