View Full Version : Gears + 10bolt
I never hear about us F-body guys doing gears... IMO these cars need it more then a mustang...
my cars dead below 3k and it makes it harder to get the thing out from a dig when first gear lasts till 45-50ish mph...
I heard swapping to a set of 3.90s:monkspk: would make the weak 10bolt even weaker.... and that its not the 200 dollars it was to swap in 3.73s in my 8.8... its alot more labor and harder to do in a 10bolt...

If your launching your car hard the higher numerical gears are easier on the rear, takes away from the shock of absorbing the power hit and moves the car easier. At least from what I've heard and thought of logically.
I've heard that as well... but I've also heard that the 10 bolt 4.10's are literally smaller then the 3.42's and you got to be skilled at doing them for it to work right.
I'm used to mustang gear swaps... simple...

i have 373s in my 10 bolt.. but i also have 33 spline axles and a built locker... personally, 3:42 gears is MUCH better for the street.. unless your pushing enough power to turn your 5th gear, your car is gonna take a shit at like 100-120 mph with 3:73s... i dont make any power til after 3k either..

6 speed = 4.10
auto = 3.73

no...
6 speed track car non daily driver= 4:11s,
6 speed street/strip car daily driven= 3:73s
6 speed street car all mighty roll racer= 3:55 or 3:42
auto Track car non daily driver= 3:73s
auto street/strip daily driven= 3:73s or 3:42s
auto street car all mighty roll racer= 3:42s
but at the end of the day its all personal preference

3:42s make 6th gear worthless until 80 mph. Heck I know a few guys that run 4.10s in their street strip autos.
What was the question again?

there is an incredible amount of misinformation in this post. wow.
33 spline axles in a 10 bolt?
3.90 gear for a 10 bolt?
4.11 gear for a 10 bolt? which is ofcourse a 44/11 ratio
3.55 gear for a 10 bolt?
a detroit locker for a 10 bolt?
3.73 mn6 car taking a shit at 100? lol, WOW.
this is all news to me. last i checked every fbody maxes top speed in 5th gear so we all have enough power to push it in 5th gear.

150mph is pretty easy to hit with 4.10's in the rear. Cant say Ive heard of an ls1 falling on its face at 100...

another issue. my 6 speed ls1 with 4.10 gears and cam got an average of 26 mpg. same car with 4.56 gears in the moser rearend got 24 mpg.
hardly a track only setup.
i have a 4.10 geared auto ls1 right now. drives sweet on the highway and around town.

honestly unless you like racing from a roll more than dig, gears won't hurt you
and we all know rolls are for bitches

I'm with you on this one...shit.
and no i've done both a ford 8.8 and a gm 10 bolt. same shit to set up.
the higher gears are a little weaker because the size of the pinion gets smaller as you take teeth away. same with a ford, it just doesn't matter because there shit isn't so damn small. because the teeth are curved and more than one tooth is in contact with the ring at all times the smaller od. and less teeth you have the less metal is in contact with the ring to transfer power at any given time = weaker over all.
just go 3.73 and be happy, unless you plan on putting it on sticky tires. then you can go higher

here you go scott. note i didnt attack anything involving the validity of a 3.73 gear in a 10 bolt.
