I've got a Holley, I don't know anything about the Edlebrocks. I think Frank has one though.

I have one, and I've never plugged a vacuum gauge into it in my life. There's not much tuning you can actually do the carb beside the idle air/fuel mix screws. All the rest is controlled by the metering rods and jets. Just rich it out so it doesn't pop on deceleration and you're good.
Now, you can tune the idle air/fuel mix with a tachometer. No, not the tach in your dash, but a mechanic's tach with small increments. Basically lean the screws out until you get the highest RPM possible and then roll them back in so you drop 50rpms or so. That's the lean-best-idle setting and should do you good.

thanks, i'll give it a try tonight. also, i have another 1406 that keeps flooding it's self, it was on for like 5 months and my car died on 19. does it just sound like it need a rebuild? edelbrock wouldn't take it back, so im stuck with the carb, and i've never rebuilt one, which i want to do. the secondaries have a hard time opening. im not sure if it's just dirty or if something came apart.

If it's flooding maybe the float is just stuck? Tap it with a rubber mallet, it might unfuck itself.
