View Full Version : Coilovers?

So, I am upgrading my suspension to coilovers. I am asking here what coilovers I should get in your opinions since I mostly do drift. Other than drift I auto-x and hardly drag race. I don't really mind a bouncy ride as long as the car handles really well. I am looking for the best performance and at least decent quality. My choices:
Megan Racing Street http://www.meganracing.com/products/product_detail.asp?prodid=317
Megan Racing Track http://www.meganracing.com/products/product_detail.asp?prodid=317
JIC FLT A1 http://www.jic-magic.com/productsjic_susp_flta1us.htm
Tein Super Drift http://www.tein.com/sddamp.html (I don't know much about these...)
Tein HE - I have been in a car with these and I like them.
Feel free to add some and give opinions on these. I want to consider this carefully. I've had a very knowledgeable person suggest JIC FLT A1's (Matt). I'm just getting other opinions. My car is a daily driver at the moment.

My HE's are super stiff but my car handles great... 3rd gear flat out in turn 1 at Sebring. The car is a little unsettled on rough pavement. The car is a 92 coupe w/sr

you have he's patrick? i thought you had ha's for some reason.
it seems alot of people are kind of let down on the megan's, saying theyre underdampened. and the adjustments are like, barely noticeable.
the jic are awesome for the money, and have a little less spring rate, which will be nice doing what you do 90% of the time, street driving.

My HEs are nice, even with a blown strut, though I think when I upgrade i'll be going with the super drifts.

I should be getting my FLT-A1's soon (tomorrow?), and have them on by the weekend. You're welcome to take them for a spin once I get an alignment. I got them for street and occasional auto-x, if I ever get a chance.

I have HE's. They are very good especially for the price. I use my car to drift and drive to work. They aren't that annoying to daily drive on either. Good luck with whatever you get.

^^^theyve been done for sooo long haha people who still try to sell them usually just want to hang onto your money for a bit. I want to be one of the first to rock out with some super drifts w/edfc. But Well see how that works out. Id go with megans, just because of the numerous positive reviews ive read abotu them, none being bad.

Ok. I guess I'll have to get more info on the Super Drifts...
Thanks everyone for your opinions. If anyone has any info or personal experience with Super Drifts, please respond.

So what if they are discontinued? Doesn't mean they aren't good. Tein still supports them with rebuilds and such. Discontinued to me just means cheaper. I got mine like 6 months ago for $1000 brand new. Maybe I'm just defending them because I have them ;-) Either way, good luck.

I really like the Tein HE's. I wouldn't refuse them, but I thought it'd be safer to purchase from a dealer.

super drifts are up there with FLT A2's and tanabe DD's.
you can't really compared bottom of the line coils to top of the line coilovers
regular
Tein Basic / Megan Street / Megan Track / KTS / Apexi N1-EXV
mid grade
Tein HE / JIC FLT A1 / Cusco Comp 2 / D DRUG /
premium
JIC FLT A2 / Tein Super Drift / Tanabe DD / Cusco Comp 2R / HKS Hypermax D' / Kei Office / Apexi N1 Pro /
Lets get into my personal impressions of each
Tein basic - suck fail don't buy
Megan Street - decent for the money, dampening leaves much to desire
Megan Track - don't bother
KTS - does not go low enough, decent ride, decent hardware
N1 EXV - same as megan street
Tein HE - best bargain , dampening leaves a bit to desire, good learner coilover, goes low with some work
FLT A1 - good dampening, nicer hardware, best for street and track in this category goes fucking low
D DRUG -goes lowest, has craziest dampening, external resivoir so you can go low, 40 clicks is too many
Cusco Comp 2- good coilover, nice all around, hard to service in usa
FLT A2 - best dampening, awesome service in usa, nice quality, goes loowwww
Tein Super Drift - dampening is nice, spring rate is stiff, good quality, teins flagship for s chassis
Tanabe DD - most baller coilover for S13, dampenign is amazing, goes fucking low, oh did i mention goes low
Cusco Comp2R - another very good coilover feels stiff yet damped nice
HKS Hypermax D - very stiff very nice setup, uses nitrogen i believe expensiveee
Kei Office - never used these, drift factory is dealer, its keiichi so it must be half way decent
Apexi N1 Pro - favorite coilover of many over in japan, only ones i rode in felt awesome stiff yet firm, not bouncy.

i say the JIC's. they are a nice brand, and are track proven. not sure how they are on the street, but i think i wouldnt be too bad

JIC's because of the dampening are awesome on the street. make sure you take care of them and torque everything to spec on them, though

as you can see with matt's basic overview on the coilovers... it really depends on how much of a set up you want...
i am not tyring ot be a pro or do some really fast drifting... so i am fine with my megan racing coilovers... so in my case, being my daily driver... and for the buck i spent... quality and price the megan racing's fit fine for me

tracks are brand new, nobody even has them
Megan offered to throw a set my way but I decided to keep my HE"s <33333 my HE's I rember when matt 1st got his, and me and frank took it to rally OMG the handling hahaha me and frank were amazed. I figure Im going to stay with the HE's and if I need to change anything Ill just get them redone at tein.
If anything that brought me to tein was the customer serivce.(I was deciding between HE's or Tanabe DDs at the time) If you have ever called tein you know what im talking about they are always very friendly and accomindating on the consumer or wholesale level! They are more than happy to share the information that they have. And I figure next time I need them rebuilt ill get 1-kg front 8kg rear like the super drifts or the DD's

I like my megan streets, little bouncy but no complaints. Great bang for the buck19. A huge step above strut/spring combo, much more refined ride. The car now tracks through turns with no understeer and very predictable oversteer. My DD setting is megans ride hight and full soft rear and 5 clicks out from full soft up front. Im lovin it. very cost effective, even more so when you got them at cost:lol:

I have the megan, and they are great for an entry level coilover. a little bouncy on the streets but apart from that no complaints, i had them for at least 6-7 months and they held well, i have street drifted and i was at the last DDay. So far they have been great. I recomended to any person who is low on cash, and wants a better set up than Spring/shocks combo.

Tein HA's here. I was thinking of getting the super drifts when a little more is said and done to the car. I love my teins. Little stiff, then again I have some helper springs on there as well. I mean I feel the paint in the road ;)
Ive been told JICs are prone to leaking. GO with what you can afford/usage will be I say.

Helper springs have nothing to do w/ ride quality.

Regina:
You will not be let down with Silk Roads, end of story.
Megan coilovers have some nice features (double adjustable, pillow ball, camber plates, etc) and would be a huge upgrade from your AGXs. They are only bouncy when you don't have the dampening matched to your rates. It seems that they are the same or similar valved damper across all their applications, which means that, of 32 adjustments, only 6 to 8 of them will fit your application - in other words, only a few of the dampening settings will make for nice handling and little bounce, and the other 20 or so settings will either be too soft or too stiff. This is probably what precipitates the claim "the adjustments are not noticable" since people have them set up completely wrong and are adjusting them in the unusable range. I have Megans on my Legacy and am very pleased with their benefit-to-cost ratio, and when in tune they are quite impressive.
If you want some very well-valved and balanced coilovers with all the features you could want that allow room for growth, SilkRoads would be the way to go (talk to Errrik from deegee about ordering them).
No offense, but FLT-A's, both 1 and 2, may be beyond your skill level.
I would reccomend the SilkRoads to you, with the Megans being a close 2nd.
On a side note - Buddy Club and D Drug coilovers are fucking amazing! ...and Tein HEs were discontinued for a reason...
Matt Vassallo
08-12-2005, 06:42 PM
personally after driving on silkroads there is a reason i didn't reccomend them. hahaha.
oh, and the lack of support stateside. ask charles tommykaira skyline about what happens when 1 of his got destroyed. yep, no stateside service.

care to elaborate why the flta's are "above her skill level"?
to my knowledge the flta1 is pretty much entry level for jic, and has less adjustment range than the megan, which to me would make it easier to dial in.
just askin !

You're right, I was thinking of the A2s, which are the baller hardcore ultra adjust JIC unit. A racing-class coilover can create too much grip for those who don't have the driving ability to control it.
I retract my previous statement, A1s would be a good coilover.
It does suck that Silkroad has zero stateside service, suck indeed, and I agree that it is a major drawback. I was just surprised they didn't even make your list, Matt.
Anybody have thoughts on the Tanabe Pro SS type 2?

im not big on tanabe suspension stuff just because im not sure on stateside support.
plus the ones youre asking about jc look like theyre made by kyb for tanabe. which means the quality is decent, but probably underdampened.
theyre basically the same as the older GAB coilovers made by kyb for GAB.
for the money youd spend on those you could get something better in my opinion. seems like inferior quality than brands like cusco, but with just as much hassle to get serviced.

We have about 5 sets of dead S13 shocks and springs at XAT, swing by and grab some and compare them to your FC. If you make stock shocks fit, aftermarket ones will too.
