you have to remember that the older cars ran small junk tires back then and smoked the tires down the track. these are not times on slicks.

also so you have to look at the setup. some of the cars have highway gears.

the 69 amx ss hurst ran every low 10's off the showroom floor with slicks :dunno: but they only made the car for one year :(

anything after 1973 is NOT a musclecar. Vipers and late gen camaros/corvettes do not belong there. They are sport cars, not muscle cars. If it can take a turn faster then 35 then its not a musclecar .

i've posted that list before and it always starts a debate about what a musclecar and what cars are not on the list, ect....

dunecune442, i hope you ment to say 74 not 73. my car is a 74. 74 was the last year they where made. same body/motor/everything from 71-74

50 fastest production cars, that means as is from the factory. You seen some of the sorry ass tires these cars come with from the factory? And you know how good tire technology was back in the 1960's.

I was under the impression that the motors were smogged out after 73 and had much more restrictive exhaust and lower compression. How was AMC able to escape? Nice car btw.

I agree with the tire thing. Steel belt radials were considered high perfomance. My BFG radial T/As squeel if I put alittle too much throttle or if I take a turn more than 30. These radial T/As are better than 90% of the tires available in the 60s and they still suck ass. :nono:

I wondered if anyone else had seen this before. I don't know who put the list together but the mix of yrs and types of cars is definately wrong I agree. How can you compare a 97 viper to a 70 Chevelle? Theres just a small technology gap there. And then look at the market that was being targeted at the time when each was produced and to try to compare them is not posible I don't think.

yea exactly. The only "new" car I would put would be a buick GN, just because they are so damn fast stock.

A viper is a sports car, a ferrari killer. I have never seen a chevelle autocross LOL.

good list though. Its nice seeing what my car ran with shit tires.

I think Hot Rod mag. put that list together. Always seems to bring up the debate on Sports Car/Muscle car. Vettes, vipers and Cobras don't belong. Not only were tires crap back then, but most of those cars were still using dual point distibutors.

:

thanks

they dropped the compression from 10.2 to 1, too 8.25 to 1 in late 71. they went from a 51cc head to a 58cc head. but they put on new style heads that flowed better in 1970 :naughty: they also raised the decks height and changed the stroke to make the 343 a 360 and the 390 a 401 in 1970. all 343,360,390,401's came with 2.02 intake valves and 1.65 exhaust valves. all 390's and 401's came with forged rods and crank.

the 1970 and up heads are really nice. i've got a friend that's pulling high 9's/low 10's n/a in a 3400lbs car with 401 with ported stock heads. i've also seen video of a guy on the amc forum run low/mid 9's n/a 401 with stock ported heads in a amx/javelin like my car. i'd guess it weighs 31-3300 with out the driver. the stock heads are that good :)

i would guess with the better heads and a few more cubes would make up for the power loss from the compression drop.

some cars had the smog stuff and some didn't. mine didn't and it came stock 360 4bbl with duel exhaust. i have a friend and his 73 amx has smog junk. from what i've read it depends on what state the car came from.

hey, you may be right. there was a egr port on my stock intake. dam i wrote all this for nothing. o-well i'm posting it anyways :) well atleast the other javelin is a 1971 :)

PS i just read that gm started using egr system in 1972.

some companies didnt make much or a performace car after 71 others did...74 Trans Am 455 SD comes to mind...still fast that year.

GN's were not very fast stock. I raced plenty of "stock" ones when they were new and they ran high 13's to low 14's. GNX's were faster. IF you modded a GN then they were fast.
