View Full Version : Running nitrous in a V8?

I'm considering running nitrous in my 440. I know I should go with a super charger or stroke it out to 496 cubic inches, but nitrous is so cheap!

Anyways I had a few questions. What system should I get? What is the max hp shot that I could put onto my motor without starting to stress parts, I cannot damage any parts seeing as how this is my only car, if I blow something I'm out of a car.

The motor is a rebuild 1969 440 out of a GTX, with a 6 barrel set up, it has been tunned, which is hard to do to a 6 barrel set up, it is pretty much the same motor that the Super Bee's came with, and it was new when it was put in with 0 miles, it has approx. 5,500 miles on it so far.

So how much could the stock internals take? and what kit would you reccomend? I am not looking for the most hp kit, just something mild.

This is a great topic first off, and a challanging motor combination. I can't say that I am a big Mopar fan but I have had a bit of experience with NOS set up's, and I can see a fix to your HP need. Your first issue is going to be the intake and carb set up. The only way I can see a NOS set up working on your intake would be a directport system (8 foggers). Even still I don't think this would be a safe choice due to the chances of "puddling" in the intake with the very short runners. Seems like a mixer for a big NOS backfire. Your other option, the best choice in my opinion would be to switch to a more NOS freindly intake and carb set up. In this case you would want to use a intake that will work best with whatever cam you have in the motor right now. Seems like, I would think a daul plain intake would be best for your cam, to keep the car strong on the motor. You may make alot more power on the spray with a single plain intake. But it may not jive very well with whatever cam is in that motor now. So you can use something like a Edelbrock Performer RPM #7193 intake to keep it on the safe side. Use a dual feed 4brl carb like a holly 750 or 800cfm unit, then you can start thinking about the fuel pump, regulator and igntion upgrades you are going to need. I don't know what type of fuel system is in your car now, so I am gonna skip all this because it this post may get a bit long, I'm gonna go directly to the meat of the matter...a NOS system and how much I would spray this motor. If you whent with the carb and intake switch you can run a Cheater plate system between the intake and carb for a smooth mix of NOS and fuel. Depending on your compression ratio, quality of fuel and igntion I would say start spraying this big motor 125-150hp maybe using a MSD timing box to retard the timing on the NOS between 4-6 degrees. Very important to have more than enough fuel pump, large fuel line and proper fuel regulator(s) on this type of set up to keep it all safe. Good luck and keep us posted

Looking in my NOS catalog, I see a kit for 3 2brl holly carbs. If thats the type of carb you have this may be the kit for you. The part number is 02013NOS and the jobber price is about $865.00, I should be able to get that kit for about $650.00. Hope the info is helpful.

I love mopar but can't help you myself, however I kind of know a guy that has a shop in Lakeland (Jimmy's automotive) on us 92 (Memorial blvd) that is super knowledgeable about old mopars and has a few badass mopars in his shop.
shop number is (863)666-2111
good luck, you own one of my dream cars !!!

might be a question to ask in the american muscle tech room or whatever its named. i have a little experience with the 440 6packs as my late uncles cuda had that setup. but as far as it being your daily driver, i honestly wouldnt fiddle with it. IMO i dont mod daily drivers just for the fact its my only mode of transportation.

best bet would be to get the carb plates and jet up for a small shot, say 75hp. safe, but still a little bit of kick for ya.
