if you are looking for one under 10k look for a nice used E36
wit some luck you might be able to find one with still very low miles and maybe even be able to pick up a 95 M3 E36 since they are blue booked for 12k but some might be cheaper
if you are heavy into modding you might want to get a 318 or a 328 and do a M3 motor swap and turbo charge that
M3=reliable engine and lots of power especially turbo'd
hope some of this ifo helps

yeah the swaps are pretty straight forward as long as you get all the right parts
but thats true for all swaps, if you dont get the whole engine and wire harness then it will nevver work
i am currently looking for a new euro to tune or maybe a high-powered asian import
still not sure yet

I just bought a nice 93 325i. I love it so far. Just need to find someone to do a nice good wax and buff for me though. So at least there is one more person with a BMW.

if your trying to keep it under 10k then you might want to look at just finding a nice clean 325is driving it for a while then talk to the guys at ActiveAutowerks (http://aatuning.com/) or Audspeed (http://audspeed.com) about doing a FI set up, very respectable and absurd power. depending on who you talk to they will tell you the audspeed set ups are "starter kits" bc most of their kits are designed to run on stock internals so at max you can push 12lbs of boost or so, where AA is considered by some to be a standard, yet many people have problems with AA's softwear
