I can't speak for Saturday, but I'm sure the sentiment is the same. Auburndale presented some unique issues. From the get-go, it was obvious that the event was NOT organized, had no true 'direction', and was not set-up correctly for the type of driving we do. I posed some very pointed questions that I needed answered before this event would be accepted by me, and by others I am sure.
Matt stepped up. He made the call, and decided to take matters into his own hands. By doing this, lending his name to the event, it added credibility. Hell, even I showed up (friday). While this was Matt's first time hosting his 'own' event (and it had it's rough spots), everything turned out pretty good considering the challenges (lack of time to prepare, etc).
Could things of gone better? Absolutely.
The first thing that 'WE' (as a collective here) must recognize is that this was a 'Promoted' event, not a 'Sanctioned' event (and I use those terms loosely). A promoted event is an event in which $$$ comes first, and then everything else. A sanctioned event (in this aspect) is an event that drivers come first.
While many argue that DGTrials is expensive, it is a sanctioned event. Spectators are a bonus, but if they don't show up, so be it. Costs have already been covered so nobody is going to force the drivers to leave.
In a promoted event though, there are expectations. There are schedules, there is alot of $$$ involved, and goals that need to be met. Crowd attendance pay a huge roll in this. Did anybody notice the number of cops hanging around? @$20/hr...it ain't cheap. Let's not forget the cost of the lights running all night for just a few people, etc. Obviously, a promotor hopes to put on the best show they can, as they have a financial risk associated in the event also, but in the end...it is the $$$ that speaks, because if the numbers are dismal....the event can not continue as they must end early to re-coup there loses.
DGTrials once ran into this issue. Dec 2004 in Ocala. We had about 26 drivers, and not many spectators, but did Kyle close up shop early? Hell no.
Safety is #1, remember this. MAtt took a 'promoted' event and turned into a 'pseudo-sanctioned' event.
My hats off to Matt, Rob, Laurentz, Steve, Antlet, Sucio, and all those that helped to make this happen. No matter how much we bitch on TR, at the actaul event, we seemed like a close knit community (which I feel that we truly are).
So will I return to Auburndale? Only if Matt or Kyle hold the event.
So Matt....Thank You. We Love ya....and we know it was not your fault.
