View Full Version : Finally ran her at the 1/4.....

Let me start off by saying it was a bad night for everyone.... First race was against an LS1 Z28 with all the bolt-ons, cams, etc. She ran a mid-18....that should tell you something. Her boyfriend ran a low 13 in his 10-second WS6. They weren't handing out slips so I only know my et and mph. This was the first time that I have raced an all-wheel-drive at the 1320, so don't make too much fun :tard:
Anyway..........................
Flubbed up the launch on the first run - wasn't ready for the green. Let the clutch out way too fast and she bucked like no other. That ran netted me a 15.11 :whoa: Don't remember the mph.
Shortly thereafter some guy blew up his engine near the 1/4 mile mark so they shut down that lane for the night.
Second run was a little better, only had the revs up around 4k because i was still getting a feel for the car. Didn't help that I was wearing work boots :dunno: This run was a 14.40 at 100.00 mph.
Third run I bettered the launch but was shifting funny -- ran a 14.48 at unknown mileage.
Fourth and last run I didn't launch as well as the third, but it was my best at 14.32 @ 100.82 mph
I'm thinking I need to work on launching because the car felt a whole lot quicker than my old firebird, which ran a 14.1 @ 98 mph
Only good run of the night was a mostly stock Hayabusa (exhaust and stretched swingarm) that got it down to a 9.46....
Oh well, there's always next week :D

How are you launching the car?? Dumping the clutch wont net you a great 60 with a STi. I stage my car like this. RPMS at 4-5gs clutch let out just to the brink of grabbing. on the second yellow WOT and slowly slip the cluch till you go. i was netting low 14s my 1st trip, and 13.1@101 my second and last trip with the car. 1.69 60 foot.
Sound to me like your bogging hard core.

First launch I had the RPMs around 3500. I wasn't ready for the green light so I dumped the clutch and bogged down bad.
Second run I completely disregarded the lights and went when I was ready. I brought the rpms up to around 4500 and slipped the clutch, much like I just stepped in a pile of dog shit... Car bogged down a little, but not much.
Third I brought the RPMs to 5500ish and slipped the clutch the same way, but my shifts weren't smooth.
Last run I did the same as the third, but smoothed out my shifting, which got me my best of the night.
Like I said earlier, the car felt very quick so I'm assuming it's my launching. It's really hard to tell without slips with all the information on them...

Don't know that 60', they weren't giving out slips. I'll try to go out again this week when they are giving slips, possibly with an accessport. As of now it has a 3" TBE and springs...those are the only mods that might have some affect on times. Elevation is about 600ft, temp. was around 65-70...

Im getting about the same times with my wrx with similar mods, you are trapping abou t 5mph higher than me so im assuming you just need practice with the car. Practice your launches and im assuming you could pull a mid 13.

13.4 or better is my goal. Maybe the tides will turn this week...

mid to low 13s should be where you are at. id go out on the street and practice some launching before you go the track.

I've been looking for a place to practice but there aren't many deserted roads or emptly parking lots close by. I'll search around today...

just go out late at night. you only need to practice the launch so you wont be hitting any high speeds. just launch the car and let off after you shift to 3rd gear. no reason to go through all the gears if you are only wanting to learn to launch

My only concern is the clutch. I don't know if it still has the stock clutch or an aftermarket one. I also don't know how the previous owner treated the car.
I didn't smell burning clutch until the fourth run, I don't know if that is good or bad....

once you stop smelling the clutch, you are getting better. i smelled mine the first couple time and if its the stock clutch, it can take a beating. ;-)

i think we need to have a "how to launch your WRX" night at the track with sam and I as instructors so everyone can get a decent time out of their car
not trying to be a jackass by saying that either, being serious.
