Ok, Im buying equipment for a mobile repair biz, and am looking for advise on what kind of rig to get. Need a mobile workshop 12X8' min space. In the past i have had a f-450 powerstroke with 12X8 box on the frame. The things i dont like about that is
1. MPG sucks, flying brick syndrome
2. overhead cabinets in the box are subjected to so much lateral movement with every little bump because of the high center of gravity, that i can't keep stuff in place, and often get in the back to find a cabinet emptied onto floor.
My thoughts,
Truck/utillity trailer- Lower center of gravity, can be seperated, and trailer left at some work locations overnight = better mpg. Cost. Get a nicer truck to drive around. ect.
Trailer fully set up will have about 2000 lbs of equipment added to its weight.
There will be a fair amount of running around done without the trailer.
Will probably average 100-140 miles a day in driving, and i would be pulling the trailer 80% of the time.
Truck will also be used as second family car.
My innitial thoughts were f-250 powerstroke/ Crew cab, (or equivilent dodge, gm, whatever the best deal i can find used in the $16k range.) and 7'or 8'X14 enclosed trailer.
I am wondering if I may be overdoing it on the truck end for pulling this trailer. I have read that with propane injection, and tuning, guys with diesels are getting 20mpg while towing. But if I had a smaller truck, (nissan, toyota, whatever) would i do just as well?
Anyone with towing experience please let me know what you think would yield the lowest opperational cost.
