View Full Version : Will 225 width tires fit on a 15x 6.5 wheel?

I will soon be purchasing tires and wheels.

I have pretty much narrow'd my choices down to these two.

or

The bottom wheel, I can get in 15x 6.5 or 7.

The top only comes in 15x 6.5

Would it bw more advantageous for me to run a 225 width tire as opposed to a 205 width? I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make. It's somewhat of a deciding factor. Thanks.

I've seen 225 50 15 drag radials mounted on 6.5 inch rim.
That's hard call... the 225 is going to give you more of a foot print, but will also be more rotating mass. There is a 3 lb per tire difference between the 225 (23) and 205 (20) toyo ra-1.

I would try the 205's and see how you like them. Here is a page that lists some options. http://www.edgeracing.com/tires/2055015/ The new Azenis looks real tempting.

Yeah, they do look really nice. I'm wondering if I shoudl use them as street/autox tires though, as that's what these tires will be for. I would imagine they only last about 15k miles or so.

I know a few guys in this forum have them (rt 615's) maybe they can chime in.
They will probably a good street tire but will wear fast. 15k will probably be the max.

What 225/15 tire are you looking at?

Easily. VERY easily.

225 on a 5" wheel is pushing it. Anyone competent with an ok tire machine should be able to do 225s on a 6.5" all day long.

Well hmm..I see the new Azenis isn't made in 225/15.

I was looking at those, unless someone can reccommend a good, cheap, street/autox tire?

All of these are in a 205/50/15.

Kumho Ecsta MX - proven
Falken Azenis RT615 - new version of proven Falken Azenis Sport (RT215)
Hankook RS2 Z212 - newcomer but I'm hearing good things it'll be my next tire

I wouldn't expect 15000 miles out of Azenis. I killed a set in about 5000 with lots of autocross runs and aggressive street driving.

FYI Falken makes the Hanabi, a lightweight 15 x 7, and Edgeracing currently has the silver ones for $95 a wheel.

Damn..I can't afford to spend 1200 dollars a year on new tires. Once a year is not bad..I need to get at least 15k miles out of my tires. Are there any tires that qualify for this?

Sure, but not that would be considered competitive ST* class tires. An alternative that worked for me when I ran a Subaru in STS is to put some decent tires on your factory wheels and use them on the street, get another set of wheels with the sticky tire of choice for autocrossing.

I'd be looking at things like the Yokohama ES100, Dunlop FM901, etc. Basically the 2nd tier performance tires. Not as hardcore as the MX, Azenis, etc, but still good tires, and you'll get your 15k out of them if you're not a retard behind the wheel.

where'd you get that number? even if you bought 2 sets of tires in one year it'd probably be less than $800 since you have 15's.

another tire to look into is the falken fk-451 if you're gonna use them for street & autox usage. how often do you autox & where? a surface like what sunriders runs on will not be nearly as hard on the tires as say a concrete surface. i've heard of people getting close to 15k out of azenis with moderate autox usage, 1 per month, just make sure you're alignment isn't outta whack & keep an eye on the pressures.

or you can do as nunyo & others do, use 2 sets of wheels, one for autox & one for street. this'll make both sets last longer ;-)

Well, I drive about 15l miles a year, I figured at every 5k, that's 400 dollars.

The only autocrossing I do is at sunriders, nothing too hardcore. I think I will try out the azenis and see how long they last. I bet I can get 15k out of em. I only auto-x every other month or so.

If you only do sunriders, then you'll get FAR more than 5000 street miles.

Tony does a lot of events, and has almost always had "AT LEAST 2" drivers in his car at any single event. He also drives quite aggressively on the street. Hence the mileage issue.

im spending about $1k a year on tires myself, just for Yoko Es100s. It was so nice spending $500 a year, now that I auto-x, tires go twice as fast. A full set arround for me in 245/45/16 at the low price I get them is a little over $500. I can understand the $1200 a year on tires part. I run bigger tires, but I get them way cheaper

as a former es100 owner, there are many better tires out there for autox usage ;-) once you start wearing out 2 sets of tires/year i think it's time to get another set of wheels/tires specifically for autox, just something to think about

BeQuietAndDrive

Yeah, very true. If I could replace tires once a year, with occasional autocross, I'd be pretty happy. I think I will go with the Azenis and see how they work for me. If they wear way too quick, then I will bump up treadrating.

This might be true if you have 15" or 17" rims. 16" sucks for a decently wide tires. I havent seen anything yet thats close to the same price as the Yokos and still perform as good or better.

falken fk451, kumho mx, the new hankook z212 to name a few ;-)

they have the Hankook at least ;)

So what is the feed back on this tire? I will need to see what my tire shop can get them for.

i've heard more sticky than the azenis 215 & possibly more sticky than the new azenis 615 plus they're CHEAP!!! grassroots motorsports is supposed to have a big tire comparo between all the leading ST tires, mx, azenis 215& 615, hankook & a couple others in their issue that comes out mid june.
