which model eclipses?
Is your current box ported? If not, why not get a properly tuned ported box for your subs...it will give them new life

If you decide on going with a single 12" sub, I have a 12" IDMAX that's DVC 4 ohm, and in really good condition that I'm looking to sell. lmk.

this is my first post in AUDIO, but correct me if I'm wrong. Doesn't a smaller speaker create a crisper sound?

Usually. Alot also depends on the enclosure and particular sub also though.

A smaller speaker is generally in its sweet spot higher. the frequency range of a smaller speaker is limited, no tweeter will play to 17 hz and no sub will accuratley reproduce 10k

In my opinion your sound preference is the biggest factor...
The 12 is the best all around sub(depending on quality)... it handles transient responses really well and can still hit pretty low... and with the right enclosure you can extend the range...
The 15 is for low bass... frequencies the 12 cant hit (also depending on quality).... best suited for big boom becuase their transient response is muddy... a 15 will still hit the note but it wont be as sharp as a 12.... but in the right enclosure it can be more snappy
And to be completly honest I have two 12's in a ported box tuned as low as I can get it... And still I want it to go lower.... so I will be moving to 15's in my other car
Just my $.02

12's for a variety of music. 15 for lower bass, but will be more sloppy

i would suggest apline type x sub should hit really clean i have one 12" in a 1 cubic foot enclosure, requires only .75 cubic feet so mine is bigger than needed it sounds good and hits pretty hard people are usually amazed that its only 1 12"... they are rms at 1000 watts an peak at 3000, im pushin 1400....PM me if u want more info

The type X's suck for the mere fact that they're inefficient as a mofo. I personally would prefer a sub that only requires maybe 3-400w rms to get it moving as opposed to 1000w rms. You're looking a spending alot more money on a bigger amp, not to mention the additional drain on your electrical system.

well first if u know where to get shit in not that expensive for amps and stuff... and seoncd if u not cheap and wanna do it right u should upgrade the electrical system.

I think I did mine right, and all I've done to my electrical system is voulantary anyway. Or if you want to do it right you dont go beyonds your cars means.. pick the most bang for your buck/application

wow nice immature post ass. someone is mearly asking for suggestions and thats what we're giving. this doesnt require the useless reply you posted. keep in mind...this is going to be personal choice. in generalizing, if you listen to a varietly of music, 12's will give you a tighter sound. 15's will push more are and hit lower frequencies, but will not be quite as precise/tight/punchy. sure you can get some kickass 15's that will hit tight as hell as well, but again, just a generalization. i have 2 12's right now and there are a lot of times i miss my 15's but i listen to a lot of rock too and thats when i like'd having my 12s in a little better. if you have any better suggestions, post them. you dont have to knock everybody else.

Always try to build a box that is within specs of the sub. If you dont, you could ruin the subwoofer.
General rule of thumb:
Smaller= tighter, punchy bass
Larger= deeper, boomy bass

i've had 10's 12's and am now running a 15 and really liking it, it really depends on what you want, you can always play with boxes too to cahnge the sound a bit, i'm running my 15 in a sealed box to make it a bit tighter, sure its not as tight as a 10, but its still good enough for my ear....
Tighter is a matter of frequence, not size.. a 15 and an 8 playing 50 hz will both sound "tight", the 15 will just move more air.

Bigger= lower freq., deeper hits
smaller = higher freq., shallow hits
my sub reccamends .75 cubic feet i did 1 cubic foot b.c i listen to a bunch of rap/hiphop and like the lower bass hits..and if u want profesional answers to your questions call the shop i work for its State OF The Art Customs In Sarasota 941-955-7570 the owners name is Scott, i would talk to either hit or Doc.

I actually downsized to a 10 inch from a 12 inch sub. I had alpine type r 2 of them. I now have 2 10 inch solo baric in a sealed box. I think it hits hard and low...you can hear it wednesday night at hooters of bradenton if you want. I have an alpine mrv 1005 to it and it pounds. Best part is i can play low bass to tight dance music. It is just more accurate.
