im working on my first fiberglass project right now. making a 3 pod a-pillar for my tercel. (no one makes one) anyways i just went to advance auto parts, it was closest to me. got about 1/2 gal of the fiberglass and hardner and a pack of the mat. i was told by a friend that uses fiberglass to rip it instead of cutting it so you have the jagged edges. it will hold better that way. if my a-pillar turns out i think ill try making a new read deck to hold the size speakers i want.

oh yea dont use too much hardner or you'll be rushing to get it all on before its too late.

Both matte and cloth can be strong, its all in the application. I use matte primarily, I feel the randomness of the strands adds strength, but if you use cloth and turn the cloth every time you should have similar outcome. I will often use cloth as the final layer on a box that needs to have a smooth side, since it doesnt have flyaways and will cover gaps etc.

Never heard anything about ripping the glass instead of cutting it, the only benfit I can see to that is having fiberglass strands flying about.

For the actual fiberglassing, use a 2 percent mixture, hardener to resin. The drop method is super inaccurate and if you use too much hardener you can crack the 'glass.

If you are making a box for subs then I would use several layers of matt (on the inside if possible).

93ex, Ripping the matt makes frayed edges like you said, It is said that this helps the matt conform better to the existing layers or layer you are working on. Like if you over lap the edges that you are laying down they will grip/soak into each other that way.

It wont matter if it looks like its one solid peice of fiberglass or 30 peices, if it doesnt flex, it doesnt flex.

What are the ways that you guys finish your boxes? does anyone paint them? or carpet them?

so far I've carpeted. I lead a very hectic life and dont have the time, or patience for paint, much less worrying about nicks and flaking. Hockey skates + paint = ugh

This site has great information for everyone to read... it is my bible...

For boxes I use fleece and reinforce with kitty hair where needed to prevent flex (always on the inside)... to paint I use self leveling primer and voila.... light sanding and its ready
