Ok, here's the situation.
Would like to keep the Mach460 (I know,,quit laughing) but replace stock speakers and head unit.
What brand of speakers do you guys/gals reccomend? I wanna buy quality stuff and I know anything other than stock is gonna sound better.
As for the head unit. It HAS to be MP3 capable. Im thinking on getting XM/Sirius subscription for a year to try it out. Opinions on satellite radio anyone????
I had thought about going w/a head unit that has video capability (Mpeg as well for all the videos/concerts that I have on CD) but dont wanna spend a ton of money just on a head unit. However, should I go w/this type of head unit can i get a quality piece for 800-900 bucks????

Kinda depends on your price range. Im confused about your first sentence. If you replace the stock speakers and the head unit, then what part of the Mach system are you keeping?
My opinion on sat radio is that Sirius > XM by a long shot. Sirius has a longer cycle so you wont hear the same song on one channel as often, not to mention their channel selection owns XM's. Yes XM has more subscribers but if you look at recent growth rates youll see that Sirius soon take over.
Getting a flip out or other screen is up to you and your budget.
Eclipse are gonna be the best bet as far as sound quality for head units IMO. As far as speakers...theres a million out there so a price range is needed to narrow it down. But it just so happens that Eclipse decks are mp3 and Sirius ready.

Sorry bout the confusion, but what i mean when i said,,"keeping the Mach460" I menat that the wiring, and sub box will remain in place. I just want some better sounding speakers and a head unit to replace this 10yr old equipment. Thnx for the opinions tho.
Guess I'll just stick w/the normal(read: aftermarket) head unit. Did some research and I just cant see spending $1000 plus on just a head unit. Besides, I bet I dont put 200 miles a month on the car. Just want something that sounds good when I have the Slayer or, whatever im in the mood for, in the radio.

For $1000 you can get a pretty damn nice full setup, assuming you dont go with an in dash tv or whatever
The search button found me this, since I remembered the $1000 budget topic was brought up a while back

keepign the mach set up is a waste of time. you will be better off just running the new speakers off the head unit and ditching the mach.

I hear ya. I took the time and went to a dedicated shop and got the same advice. I was told that you cant just swap out the speakers and head unit while keeping the Mach 460 wiring in place. So, here's what I was told: For $1,100 I can get a whole new system (same amount of speakers and 2 10" subs.) I dont want booming bass just a good system that sounds great when I feel like cranking it up. My music tastes go from one spectrum to the other and I listen to all types of music. I think this price is fair, but 1,100 dollars can get me my stroker kit for the motor instead. Thnx for the advice.

what exactly were they selling you for 1100 and what shop did you go to?
dont tell me A and B audio in tarpon
I used to live in palm harbor, take a trip down to AVE Audio across from Macaroni Grill on 19 and have them do it right with good equipment.

That's exactly where I went to get my estimate. Guess I got a good shop. What's wrong w/the place in Tarpon? Just wondering.
As for what equipment I was getting,,All i can tell ya is that it was a new Kenwood head unit. Didnt really discuss brand of subs, amps, and speakers. Recommendations?????

Nah man AVE will get you good stuff either way, id go with all diamond from them though. I wont go into detail with the place in tarpon, but you never get a good gut feeling walking in there and talking to their guys.
JJ (owner of AVE) on the other hand is the most knowledgeable person in car audio ive ever met, and will spend an hour talking to you and explaining shit if you want him to, and once he gets a feel for how much you know, he wont talk down to you or make you seem dumb (although it may seem this way at first because he knows so much stuff that he just blurts it out). And Vaughn (their main installer, the younger lookin guy) went to metra school and is really good.
Im sure 1100 was about right if thats what JJ quoted you, because although their prices for install might be a couple bucks more than other places, their product prices are very low, and more than compensates. And JJ wont ever sell you anything you dont need. If you go in there wanting a whole system, and he knows its not practical, or wont sound as good as it could, he will highly advise against it, and once he spits out his wealth of knowledge as to why, youll agree.
CLIFF NOTES: JJ at AVE audio is the man. Get mainly Diamond audio from him, and youll be happy.
