Default '82 Mustang GT: Road trip and exhaust questions

Alright, it has been a long while since I have posted here, but when I did I was well recieved and got a lot of friendly help. I hope to get the same again. I own a stock 1982 Mustang GT with 73,000 miles on it. It has been given to me as my first car and the only previous owner was my grandmother who bought it new. Nothing has been changed out. I would like to get a true dual exhaust system for the Mustang as it is what I was told to do first. As well, I am going to be driving the car on a road-trip this summer, possibly more than 2,500 miles. So to you I have two questions. One, can anyone recomend a specific performance exhaust system compatable with an '82 Mustang GT, as well as a good place that can install it for me, as I do not have the experience to do so myself. I'd also appreciate any price estimates that you can give me. Two, what should one do to prepare a car for a cross-country road trip to prevent oneself from being stranded in nowhere 20 miles from the nearest anything. Price estimates on such preparations would be appreaciated as well. My thanks in advance. ~Marcus

If you can avoid the road trip with the car, do it because one, the car has low miles and you should try to keep it that way for as long as possible. I'd rent a car.
If you want to upgrade exhaust it depends on your personal preference. There are different types of exhaust such as mufflers with a different number of chambers, thus making the car louder or quieter. Post up your opinions but definantly I say go with some kind of flowmasters.

Default That's what everyone's been sayin'

NEarly everyone has talked to has recommended going with a set of flowmasters. So with my lack of knowledge I lay down another question. Is there a true dual exhaust system made by flowmaster compatable with an '82 Mustang?

Anyone can custom fit a set of tailpipes specifically for your car. I didn't see anything on Jegs as far as systems. and most flowmaster mufflers in production are designed for every car above '79 so you wont have a problem with that.
Just go somewhere thats known for good work. Id go to A-1 Exhaust or Automotive Engineering to make sure the job gets done right.

I had a New 1982 Mustang GT....miss that car...anyway i think the only problem you might run into was the tailpipes being too close to the brake lines. And yes i would recommend Flowmasters!

Flowmasters suck.... everyone has them, and they dont sound as good as MAC, IMO. This is what you should look into. http://www.macperformance.com/store/...&Product_ID=23

Thanks much everyone! I like the way to flowmasters sound, but they are the only ones I have heard upclose in person, but I will definately look into MAC as well. As well I think I'll simply avoid using the Mustang for the road trip.

if you want true duals you need a double hump transmission crossmember to clear the pipe. any 79-93 off road/cat'ed h pipe will work. flowmaster american thunder stuff is pretty popular. you will need an extra exhaust hanger on the side without a tail pipe.

chad at blueoval corral can help you, 727-571-1996
joe at fordspeed can also help you, 727-549-8255

there are other shops that i understand treat cusomers fair, im sure they'll chime in, you can save big on barley used parts at these shops sometimes, or check domestic car parts for sale.

If you want to use the MAC mufflers go ahead but MAC's tailpipes are junk. Chrome plated pot metal that rusts constantly and always need to be polished again just to look good n keep from rusting. Do yourself a favor and use the Flowmaster tailpipes or the DynoMax 2.5" tailpipes, they are stainless like the stock ones and unlike the cheap MAC shit they wont rust and they fit right. Or just get good mufflers and use stock LX tailpipes, they are cheap, they fit, theyre stainless, and are 2.25" diameter but that car doesnt need anything bigger for performance. Get a set of shorty headers (stock or aftermarket) and dump those nasty exhaust manifolds on the motor. Then bolt up any decent H or Xpipe and you'll have better sound and a much better breathing exhaust system. Whatever u do, use someone that does clean exhaust work.
