OMG that was a fun course and really damn fast.My only complaint was the turn around was really tight, but I got that down on my 4th run by downshifting to first. My semi new tires about now shot too and outta balanace. Just call me "Cone Killer"
here's the results, for some reason the board wouldn't let me upload...

You can't really blame a time that bad on tires. That time could have been beaten on bare wheels.
:-D
I bet it was fun anyway, how many spins were there in that run?
If you aren't on the yahoo list. Someone posted some pictures.
Here are some photos from today's shenanigans.
All the shots are from the first heat in the morning.
We had some great action today, including pylons
with impressive air-time, 360s, rally-style drifts,
and of course, excellent driving. The pictures on
the site have been cropped to try and maintain
a pleasing visual image, so the aspect ratios may be
quite different from one to another.

The last image is a reminder of why racing on the track
is so much nicer than racing on the street. The Accord
pictured was driving pretty fast on I-75 and lost
control in front of me. The driver must have over-reacted
and oscillated between left and right drifts with increasing
amplitude. The tire tracks through the ditch show
the sideslip angle as the vehicle left the road and
eventually hit the embankement. No one was hurt,
thankfully, but they suggested that installing the new
lowered suspension made the car considerably more
difficult to control.
Thanks to everyone for their help in putting on a great event
today. Abandoned runways rule.
Regards,
Mujahid

If I had some better tires it might not have happened, it was one long spin out, the car just wouldnt stop sliding and slide all thru the line of cones on the turn around. I was nice enough to get out and help em put em back up though, then continued
:-D
probably the best event ive heard grip on for the most part, I could accelerate hard outta the turn around and not worry about wheel hop or constant spin. I stuck some new LCA on the night before that helped out a lot since the bushings were split in half and squished. I still wanted a 47 though, got the turn around correct on the 4th run, but fucked up the last two.

thanks jerm for posting up the results.
I really accomplished the goals that i had yesterday of looking ahead and learning how to use my engine more smoothly. brakes aren't something i need a lot of.
my times were not impressive and in the afternoon i tried to go for speed and we see what happened. which taught me another lesson, speed isn't something i want to go for. looking ahead and working with my hatch will eventually bring the speed i need without the cones and the dnf's. :D
and i <3'd my spin out! that was a blast!

This was my first event and definately will not be my last. This was so much fun. I met alot of super nice people including "Fast Phil" with whom I worked a station. After talking to him, I found out that he is multi-series, multi-time champion(and a darn nice guy).
Thanks to everybody involved but especially ChiTownBrat for encouraging me to try this. :)

Stickier tires wouldn't have changed a thing. You're overdriving now. Having more grip isn't going to change that. You'll still spin out in the same places. You'll just be going faster when you spin out. You'll slide further and take out more cones.

So Leonard, how were the new rt-615s?

I think they were pretty good. I didn't have any heat fade (not that I should on a 2000lb car with 275 width wheels). They've got pretty good road manners. No tramlining. Don't seem to sing too much on the interstate (at least not enough that I hear them over wind/exhaust noise -- of course, my car is kinda loud to begin with).
As far as comparing them to the old azenis or other tires, the only tires I've driven the FFR on up to this point have all been old and dead. I was pretty happy with the level of grip they provided. The additional grip has made some other handling characteristics in the FFR painfully obvious.
I need to get rid of the 4 link suspension in the rear for something that doesn't bind up and cause snap oversteer. A torsen LSD is in the works as well... the traction lock has far too much preload in it for the FFR and was causing severe push in the hairpins. I'm also in need of stiffer springs all around.
There you go. Lots of answers, but none of them you were looking for. :-D

Well, now I know that I don't want to drive it at Sunriders!
The absence of tramlining is interesting, though. I have that problem with azenis and the kumho mx. Did you notice the amount of sidewall flex? What pressures were you running?

Koni DA's, springs, and a 3 link are on order. It'll be much better soon. :-D
I settled on 25psi all around. I think a little lower would have been better. I was hoping someone would catch a picture of me in a hard transition so I could see what was left of the sidewalls before I go lower. FFR's do well with low pressures. The guys running Victoracers run 22-25psi.
The steering felt pretty solid, so I don't believe that sidewall flex was much of an issue.

Looks like www.tires.com now has limited stock of the new Azenis in..... they were slightly cheaper than Vulcan for 2 275/40/17's shipped to my zip. Considering a set for the front on the truck, front NT555R sidewalls are hating life... rears still look ok. I think sticky fronts with sidewalls that are designed NOT to flex unlike my nt555r's will help me to plant it in the sharp turns.
