View Full Version : Increasing angle
US, vs Japan.
WTF. I see all these video's and they are near if not at 90 degrees in japan not spinning out, tire smoke out the ass. Then I look at US and its like good angle probably at full counter but still not nearly as much as the japanese guys. I know alot of it is just skill and pratice. But I want to get some opinions on how to increase angle's.
Some that I know.
1. Aftermarket tie rods, with spacers. This increases the steering angle that can be used. I have seen some cars that have to much angle, and the wheels start shaking violently, dont know how safe that is.
2. Ebrake after initiation.(sp) I see this alot with the japanese guys, they will start in 3rd, or 5th depending on corners start the drift, let the tires take off some of the momentum then start yanking the ebrake to increase angle (reduce speed too) then down a gear and floor it for the SPL smoke show.
Any others?
modulate with left foot braking

yeah left foot braking works also.
the biggest thing is the track setup in japan. they have nice decreasing radius turns which are awesome for getting tons of angle. when the track is set up right, you can get crazy angle on them, like at the origional DDAY... At the end of the day in Wolverine I was pulling crazy early entry and high angle when doing tandem with erik and tony schultz. it just comes with seat time experience and the right track..
Oh yeah, i rember cause jay had insane angle...he did look like japanese style there hahaha.

Something I dont understand and I guess I see it from a few different views is, Why is it EVERYONE wants to be like "japan" I think everyone has their own style. For instance, if EVERYONE wanted to be like Tony Hawk there wouldnt be any other good skaters out there. In reflection I guess you should/can do what works best for YOU.
Then again your looking at a place where Cars are a passion, unlike fat ass americans who sit watch football and drink beer all afternoon every sunday?monday for a month or two. Practice like ANYTHING else will get you to where you wanna be.

this is true. i dont want to be a japanese drifter, im just looking for ways to better my own style with japanese technique.

You don't think that other country's basketball teams wanted to play just like the Americans around Olympics time? (Mostly referring to Dream Team 1) The Japanese are very good at drifting, much more so than us. (generalization) I don't think that this is a style thing at all, since there are particular categories being judged. Now if everyone said that they wanted to drift like Taniguchi, that would be a style thing.
It's about focusing on one thing that makes you better, not copying one person's particular style.

the way ive gotten better with my angles with with a cone and working on entry speeds...
then working on adjusting my pitch of the angle in mid slide..how with ALOT of throttle control and steering
who cares about angle.
its about how much understeer you can get.

I dunno not really tring to be like the japanese people. I just want to increase angle. It shows more skill level. less angle= not as cool. Plus higher drift angles can creatate more smoke ect. Its just a higher level of drift that I am tring to get at. I have seen alot of video's of japanese with crazy angle, not to much US drivers.
florida doesnt have the right courses to practice on

you dont have enough speed to do what you are trying to do.....
and the faster you go the more damage there is to cause..so take that into consideration...

i just started practicing bigger angels when i enter the turn i turn sharp into the turn and tap the brake hard with my left foot wich cause a huge weight transfer to the front wich brigs the rear around easier and then accelerate as necessary then if i start to loose angle push in clutch puul handbrake fast release clutch kick all of those very fast and with that ive been getting really good angles lately

this is very true, you can't get lots of stupid angle unless your speeds increase, as well as adjustable tie rods to help also. i'd have to say that the first dday coarse was my favorite also.
shit i would love to go and "train" in japan, me and evan would make a pretty badass duo. :tard:
hell yah we would.
bill if you can scrounge for a ticket, we have a car you can drift!!!
if not we can practice in america.

Not necessarily true. Depending on the course, I like to have a more shallow angle sometimes. Because I have a pretty low power engine, less angle makes it easier for me to speed up in the middle of my drift. This works especially well on a straight away leading up to a big corner. Keeping it loose and gaining speed doing manji, setting up for the big corner, or even a 90 degree corner leading to a straight, then using the momentum to keep full lock on the big corner/straight. To me that shows skill too. I like using a shallow angle to help set up for a big angle, but that's just me. Too many big angles all the time just slows you down
I agree that large angle is cool, but I agree that we don't have many courses that support large angle. I mean d1 drifters have like special knuckles that get like 45*+, if not more, I'm still a bit sketchy on that. the corner that I try is like a 60mph corner, and I can't seem to get any great angle on it, but I suppose if I keep up consistancy, then angle will come. You have to remember drifting has been around like 15x as long over in japan, so they've had much more time to develop their skillz. Just my two cents,
