im not trying to sound like an ass but what is the point? does it just save unnesecary weight? or is it for the paint job?

according to several sources on FA, the weight savings from removing the sound deadening is more than 40lbs.
craig_302
01-15-2005, 04:59 PM
40 lbs here, 10 there, 50 in some other place...it all ends up adding up. Plus, it always looks much cleaner with fresh paint with it all gone if the interior is going to stay stripped.
yeah with all the non-necessary interior stuff and trunk stuff (or hatch stuff), and misc engine items deleted, you can save in upwards of about 200 lbs.
then add lighter wheels, lighter exhausts (titanium), light flywheel, light driveshaft, and just more power and it works well.
no sound deadening or carpet means more noise but sometimes noise is good ;)
looking good jamie. what color are you painting the car? and is this one going to be RHD converted? if you're not keeping it a big secret, got a vague or basic mod list youre shooting for?
driftchik
01-15-2005, 06:27 PM
not a big secret
1. The point is, i'm building my car to be a show car as well as drift. (When its painted the inside is going to look like glass, thats why) There will be nothing inside, but a cage, a dash and a bride seat
2. As far as the weight factors concerend thats never really been an issue for me, but the fact is, thats a lot of weight, so thats a plus to get out of the car.
3. Yes it is going to be RHD, with a s14 happy eyes front end
at the moment, i think im shooting for a ka-t. Version select 3kit, Tein flex.
4. Paint should be comming up within the next few weeks. I am reincarnating the pink car, with pink flake. same inside.

Jamie,
we recently removed the sound deadning material out of Rob's chassis. It takes about a day total to do it properly. you'll need about $30 in dry ice from a local dry ice / carbon dioxide supplier, cover the entire floor with it. the chassis will creak and groan, and tap everything with a hammer. entire 1' x 1' sections will just pull right off. the hard part is getting it literally out of the car, and out of all the nooks and crannies. you need a shop vac, a brush, and a dust pan.
after that about 3-4 cans of brake cleaner and a wire brush to scour the whole thing, as well as scuff it up for primer and base then clear.
it looked like you used a heat gun, but what was your technique?
looking good! be sure to remove the other bracing and stupid shit on the bottom side of the chassis, as well as pressure wash 90% of the crap off of the bottom of it. You'd be surprised how heavy dirt is!
Durdan
01-16-2005, 09:24 AM
she heatgunned and scrapped most of it out. you heat it up untill it bubbles, then it just comes right out. then you mineral spirit the rest out, then sand it down.
repeat as necessary
add salt
serves 4

you forgot the twist of lime.....and serve chilled using matt's dry ice.....

thats exactly how i did it to my mr2. crazy... i used a chisel and a rubber mallet, along with the magical dry ice... put the dry ice on some wax paper, set it on the sdm, and then took a chisel and rubber mallet to chip it away. huge pieces... But i have also tried the heat gun way too, imho its too messy... shit gets everywhere.

i def agree. if, and thats IF i ever have to do this again, there no doubt in my mind, it will be with dry ice.

yes we saw the pic a loong time ago then we kind of fell into the parts, and thought wow that would be great... then so be it.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That front end actually looks better on a hatch than the S13 Silvia front end does on a hatch. The soft lines on that front better match the rest of the car.
Matt Vassallo
01-16-2005, 08:00 PM
that's one of the reason why the s15 front end flows. cause it's nice and round.
