So my grandparents live in Rhode Island...as weird as it sounds Im thinking about getting them a keyless/remote start for next christmas, because getting the snow off of, then getting into their freezing car sucks and they would use it a lot being that theyre old.

My question is, they have a 97 5 spd camry...yes my grandparents drive 5 speed. I know on my car, although its a 5 spd, there is a wire on the ecu which I can tap into, ground when in neutral, so it will only remote start in neutral, but on the other hand, a guy from work has a 98 or 99 civic which has no such wire. I am not going to ghetto wire their car and have it remote start in gear, so how would I go about finding out if there is such a wire on their car. If not is there a way to make something that will work to that effect?

Thanks in advance
-Kevin

I dont have the neutral safety switch in any of my diagrams.. but do you want the diagram to help you with the alarm install?

Well I mean Ive done alarms for work and shit, and I can get on to directechs to find all the wiring for any car (but it doesnt have this info) so if thats all you have then I doubt it will do much more, but you can pass it along anyway

Do you know of any toyota boards I could ask this on to people who have this car and have fucked around, to get a definite answer?

Kevin,

To the best of my knowledge that car does not have a NSS wire.

Altough I had one installer do something to this effect. He set up a series of magnets around his shifter, and somehow it sensed if it was near it and wouldnt start. I cant remember all the details of it. But I can find out, it worked like a champ.

no ideas, but if anyone knows how to hook this up on a mustang that would be pretty cool :)

Well whtmustang theres always adapters like this one from peripheral, which put the alarm in stop and go mode, making sure it is in neutral when you get out of the car.
http://peripheralelectronics.com/periph_products/cd_changer_autos/instructions/Peripheral%20-%20NSS.pdf
But IMO I wouldnt want to deal with the alarm's stop and go features and shit, I just want it to work like normal.

The stop and go mode makes it so that you press the button to make it go into this mode, take your key out, get out, lock it, and it will turn the car off. Therefore the car must be in neutral, since technically you leave it running. If the doors or e-brake are tampered with, it will not start

There are also alarms with the stop and go crap built into it, like ones by Designtech (which I have never heard of, just found them searching)
http://www.designtech-intl.com:8080/merchant.ihtml?id=19&step=2
But you still have to deal with turning the stop and go mode on and off

Ultrastart also makes ones like this, the 2250M, which I read on some random site I found that it automatically goes into stop and go mode, but their site said nothing about that so I dont know

So basically what I am looking for is if either DEI or another good company makes a remote start designed for stick shifts like the ultrastart one...or another way out like the magnet setup that Nate talked about, but it needs to work 100% of the time and last a while since its my grandparents and theyre all the way in rhode island.

Hope that helped
Kevin

i dont really understand what u mean by messing with the stop and go features, and the link isnt working, it looks like a chiniese dude wrote somthing in notepad
But i really dont want anything to change, 99% of the time i take it out of gear and just use the e-brake but sometimes ill be cleaning and move it up and forget, or someone else will and stuff, i would rather be 100% sure everything is ok. but i dont want my alarm to be any differant, just that added.. its a clifford *** (dont know model) if that matters at all

google it then, or reread

btw if u dont have acrobat reader to view that page by peripheral then you are the suck
