What is this setup like ?
I was there 2 or 3 years ago and they had no cones on the Gainesville track. You took one lap as a warm up lap and then you had a running start at the starting line. They timed you for 2 laps after that.
I didn't think it was worth the money, but we had the event cut short due to serious rain.
If you go make sure you have fresh brake fluid. If you haven't attended an auto-x at Gainesville, I would probably do that first just to learn some of the curves and how the surface feels.

Whats the price on it anyway? I was there a few months ago and would have loved to did it with no cones. Id probably toss on a set of real brake pads and not use regular "Wearever Gold" pads like I normally do.

$80, plus they charged us $15 for a novice Solo Trials license. At the event, they forgot to charge me for the license and then a couple months later I got a check in the mail from the SCCA for $15. I assume this was a refund for a license that I never bought. Sweet.

Ah well next year probably then. Im not an SCCA member yet, so that would be like $170 almost just to run.
That and looking at the rules, I guess my car would require a roll cage and harness, unless it was stuck under some other class other than modified?
I might just show up though and snap pics, just need to find a full time spotter

You don't need a cage. Street Mod is not a Modified class. Modified classes are A Mod, B Mod, etc. AFAIK

good to know on that at least thanks

Jeremy is correct. Street Modified isn't considered part of the Modified classes. It's something totaly separate.
Back in the day, it was Stock -> Street Prepared-> Prepared -> Modified.
Then they added the Street touring classes. SM was originally an extension of those that allowed more mods and competition tires.
I'm debating running it in the Cobra. I don't know that I'm comfortable enough with it to do it this year.... On top of it, I'll have some work to do to pass tech inspection. (Arm restraints, new harnesses (y harnesses aren't permitted afaik).

I'm gonna do my darndest to make it in the Miata. I've got a different roll bar on order. I think I'll need to install a racing seat in order to get the top of my helmet to be 2" lower than the top of my the bar. I'll also need arm restraints and 1/2" of padding on the bar near my helmet.
I did this last year in the 2.5RS. It was a good time for sure. I did have to replace my brake pads Saturday night just to be able to run on Sunday. The event did kind of show just how underpowered that car was compared to a lot of others, it's gonna be rough in the Miata for the same reason.
If I remember correctly that $80 covers the whole weekend.

I won't do this event in a car I own, but if anyone else is interested in a codriver, I may be inclined. Something with power would be nice...

It's not safe enough to risk his own car, but he'd be happy to risk yours. :D

More like Loren is giving him a friendly ribbing and giving him shit. No need to turn into a fiasco telling Loren to STFU.
back on topic, I acutally just might make this, I noticed its in march, I thought it was february :crack: I could get the money for it in time then.
[edited mofugga's quote at his request, don't hurt me, Mars]
This event is no more dangerous than a regular autocross, if you are an experienced autocrosser. It just has less turns, which means less fun IMO.
It was kind of fun beating up on fully prepped Solo I cars though.

1. I did a "track day" at GIR about 2 years ago, when I first got the MR2. The MR2 is slow in a straight line, and infact, it gets worse the faster you go. The short 1st and 2nd gears run out and then you feel like you're driving something with about 60 hp... it's sad.
2. For my autocross purposes, the Toyota OEM brake pads are fantastic, and they're very good daily driving pads as well. However, they will fade badly on lap #2 of a hotlapping session on GIR running clockwise. I'm not about to buy a set of pads that I'll use once for this event, as it's expensive enough.
3. Cars with a lot of power aren't something I've driven a ton of. Most of my "success" has come driving smaller cars, so things with power are FUN for me as far as learning to drive goes.
4. I like driving other cars, to see how they are.
5. My own car is in the process of getting quite a few near parts that may or may not be available at the time of this event. With the 1.8 M1 miatas showing up in ES, the decision was made by myself and Jim that we should show the Miatas what's up and go win. :)
so... there you go.
