Default Reverse light wiring... at->mt swap

So a friend and I are wiring reverse lights on our S14s with tranny swaps.
I have the clip from the autotranny, and when splicing black and green into the transmission (and cutting off the MT plug) it works in my car. So we cut his wires behind the clip (we only had one), and wired them to his MT the same way. But his reverse lights are on in every gear except reverse (and neutral). Even though it shouldn't have mattered, we switched the wires, and it didn't do anything (as it shouldn't have.. we're just closing a circuit in reverse in theory).
Any insight as to why my setup works, while his works backwards?

No. This isn't a post asking who to sell my auto tranny to.

And how could it be a ground problem? There are 2 wires from the fuse box connector strip to the transmission.
However, his is a '95 and not working correctly. Mine, I believe, will have reverse lights tomorrow.

Whoa, you had a 240 with working backup lights? One in a million.

They still work.. I just gotta wire them. My friend's however, work backwards. This is the issue we must solve.

Thanks.

The issue was that whoever built his transmission stuck the 5th gear sensor in the reverse light sensor's spot. Switched them and it's golden.
