i found a head unit on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5724036278) that has a 6.5" tft lcd screen, plays DVD/CD/CDR/CDRW/MP3, has an am/fm radio, and a tv tuner. for only $500. that only bad thing that i could see about this is the quality of the manufacturing. I haven't heard a lot of good things from pyle, but it comes with a 1 year warranty. Has anyone had experience with pyle? Is this a good deal?

Pyle is probably the worst of the worst when it comes to mobile electronics. And in the end, it usually always comes down to getting what you paid for. Save up. I recommend an Alpine or Pioneer unit.

That's a decent unit. Keep in mind you would need to add a dvd player to it though. A PS2 would work well.

I ran a ps2 as a dvd player... I wanted the screen, but couldnt justify the 1300 tag for somethign that i could barley use with the screen closed, since most dont have dual displays...

You can just get an lcd off ebay for under 100, then get a single din DVD player for another 100-150. That's what I was going to do when I had the Accord, then I thought about it and realized that I'd never really watch dvd's in my car anyway.

ya, i'm trying to get some cash together right now. i'm thinking about just throwing my xbox under my seat and getting a screen. I was going to buy that screen and head unit that the guy is selling on here, but he wants like 900.

I was thinking, if i get an in-dash screen, could i mount the cd drive from an xbox in the din below it? I could put the xbox under my seat with a power inverter, and run all the wires through my center counsel. The only problems that i could think of were 1. can i extend the ide cable, and power cable on the drive, and how do i hook up the audio for the xbox?

Has anyone done this before?

93ex
10-05-2004, 10:16 PM
peopel have done this before. Nobody on tr that i know of. I wanted to do it with ym ps2.

there was a c5 vette that had teh xbox door molded into the center console, and youd press the button and itd slide out. Very trick, it was in a back issue of a car audio mag, but i threw it out

I bet you can buy a longer ide cable from like newegg or some shit, if not, you can cut/solder it together id think.

audio for the xbox..if you dont have an AUX in on your head unit, then I would say fm modulator

adero
10-05-2004, 10:33 PM
well, i thought if i got a screen that had an am/fm radio built in i could have the audio go into the screen, and then back out into the speakers, but probablt don't need to, i can deal without the radio. I figured i would have to just make a longer ide cable, because it is not a standard cable. I also wanted to make the drive built into the empty din under the screen so that it is flush, and has the power and open/close button built in. I'll have to learn how to fiberglass. I also want to have my xbox modded by suprakid so that i can play every game, and other kool stuff. this should pretty bad ass if i do it.

are you making the xbox the head unit?

adero

pretty much. But i'm not sure how i would be able to control the volume.

93ex
10-06-2004, 10:22 AM
you could do an inline pentiometer but thats just becoming rediculous.

Im guessing you want to spend as little as possible?

What would be pimp:

Get something like the Clarion ProAudio DXZ445 (160 bucks on crotchfeel) 2 preamp outputs, and AUX in, and remote. Mount it under your seat or inside your glove box or center console. (i would do glove box or center console.) Take the remote apart, extend the wires for the IR transmitter, and place the transmitter inside the glovebox/center console/under seat in front of the HU.

find a suitable place for the remote, like on top of the arm rest, or on the door panel. and run the IR transmitter wires there, and put the remote there with some 2 sided tape or if youre getitng creative, you can fab up a mounting plate for just the top half with buttons. That way you can control volume, or am/fm, and have preamp outputs, and an internal amp. If youre using the xbox for cd/mp3, then the HU can be mounted 90 degrees off axis, since the laser wont matter. Nobody will see the HU inside the glove box, and it will be very trick.

SO you put the screen in the din spot and mold the xbox drive door in there too, and you watch your videos/games/mp3 display etc, on the screen, and radio with the head unit.

i love you. jk. I can get that cd player on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39757&item=5724089491&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) for 125 shipped. And i'd probably mount it in my glove box because it's easier. Now i need to find a screen. I don't really care what brand it is as long as the picture is good. What is a good screen resolution?

The Xbox game console rounds out the equipment list at the source end. This proved to be the biggest challenge. Kevin wanted to locate the CD-ROM drive in the dash, which required attempts at producing different lengths of ribbon cable, only to find that the cable could not be lengthened by conventional installer techniques. The solution would be to locate the hard drive as close as possible to the main circuit board of the Xbox and lengthen all of the other wires as needed. As is common practice for any good installer, a bit of research was in order. A phone call was placed to Redmond, Washington. As it turned out, the technicians at Microsoft said the modification couldn't be done (which probably means they couldn't figure out a way to make it cost a lot of money while building a monopoly at the same time).

The outstanding mobile electronics installer is renowned for one key attitude: "If someone says 'it can't be done', let's prove them wrong!" With very little difficulty, the game console was dismantled, the hard drive was located in the dash and the disc tray motorizes neatly out of the rear console, facing forward for reasonably convenient access. The game control plugs for the controllers were relocated to the dash and rear of car, just under the trunk latch, allowing for control of the Xbox outside the rear of the car for use at car shows.

I don't really understand how they installed that xbox in the car. They said that the ribbon cable couldn't be extended, so they made the hard drive as close to the dvd drive as possible?? then where did they put the motherboard? The problem might be that the dvd drive needs to be close to the hard drive so that you do not get read errors on the discs, but haveing the IDE cable running from the hard drive to the mobo should also have problems.

Does anyone know where i can buy 40 pin ribbon cable and hard drive connectors so that i can test out lengths?

Shit, that's probably a $50k system. Good luck attempting anything remotely similar if you don't have about 10 years of of custom car audio experience under your belt.

pfft. how do you get 50k? it'll be closer to $600. the most expensive part is the screen, and that's like 300. then it'll cost like 150 to mod the xbox, and some other little stuff.

I would assume the circuit board would be in the dash or somewhere near...

and 50k was meant for the vette system with the flushed etc

I am cloning the hard drive from the xbox in my room.. which consists of all Nintendo, Sega, SNES and some N64 games, 110 Xbox games, 40 full length DVD ripped movies, 30 Music videos, all southpark episodes, dave chappelle.. standup comedies.. All the good car videos I download from online aswell.. and still have room for more. With MP3's there are so many visuals it can play aswell.... even with regular CD's.... so you arent limited to just what your unit can do for visuals... you can always download new ones. I am thinking of also going with an internet setup in the car... xbox can browse through websites aswell, and stream/record video/audio from the internet...

Werd... count up how much it would cost to do a clean in-car computer with same or faster speed than an xbox :) They have some cool setups @ www.mp3car.com that they sell... I thought about doing that but still nothing beats scrolling through screens with hundreds of games.... everything in clean setup menu's rather than explorer or something on a regular windows based incar computer. An incar computer looks messy if you can't hide the guts... the xbox while still having more capabilities (for incar, not personal use) FOR THE MONEY can be neatly fitted into a nice cute little slim box which easily slides under my seat, for nobody to know what it is or where it is :D All that and NO LONG BOOTUP TIMES! :D :D

I havent seen anyone go my route yet, which is why I want to do it.... but I will definately post up pictures and info of the custom fab work I have to do

actually, i was partially joking. I don't think that custom work cost 50K on that corvette though. maybe 20k or so. but anyway, it doesn't really matter.

I've talked to people that have made 6 foot long IDE cables and had them work fine, so i think it should work alright. I'm going to check with one of the distributors for the company my dad works before because they sell ribbon cable by the foot, and i can get it for like 10 cents a foot, and the connectors for cheap too.

You'd obviously be surprised. I work at a shop, we just did a $20k system, and trust me, it wasn't anywhere near the custom fabrication involved in that vehicle.

well, the xbox doesn't fit under my seat, so i think i would be better off mounting it under the glove box. I'm designing something that will screw into the firewall, and act as a shelf for the xbox to sit into. I think mdf should work, but i would like to do it in fiberglass eventually. I'm just going to keep the xbox intact because it is easier to access the drive from this location, and i will put the power inverter under the passenger seat, and run the power wires under the carpet. This will be a LOT easier. I think i'm gonna start building something this weekend even though i don't have my xbox modded, or a screen yet.
