I wasn't sure about where to discuss this, but since its an audio forum a lot of you should have alarms. I've been looking for an alarm and i found plenty for the price range of $30-60 with many functions, even more functions than i need. Now, how well do they perform and would there be a BIG difference between them and more expensive alarms (like Viper/Clifford)?

YES there is a big diff..you pretty much get what you pay for, i doubt a 30-60 dollar alarm would be much more effective then a factory alarm

ahaaa, well it's good to know then. i was about to buy one of the cheap ones. Honestly, all i wanted is the siren so i can go check out my car if someone tried to break in, also it will scare whomever is trying to break in. so what is a good alarm for good price to pick?

i dont know about mid grade ones. the one i am gettin in my car is a viper somthin or another, but it has all the bells and wistles and is a couple hundred. i would also get it installed at buzz off. they wire there shit so nice its not even funny, you can pm me and ill tell u aroudn the area they wired my old car and u can decide if its worth a lil extra money for the security lol

The main differences in alarms is the features offered and the sensitivy of the sensors, which are usually adjustable anyways. How easily someone can get past it or it's effectiveness has alot to do with the install, not the actual unit. I'm sure you could find something decent in the $30+ range on eBay...only problem is most shops will only install what they sell.

Cheap alarms are usually as good as the expensive ones until you start to get upto 2 way LCD pager alarms. The biggest difference thou is the install. All a basic alarm is shock sensor, kill start, keyless entry, and a siren. As john said you could prolly find something cheap but now you have to worry about who is going to install it which is why your going to pay around 100$ for a basic alarm at a shop because it includes the labor to install it. IMO id go to a shop or CC/BB and get an alarm because they will install the alarm for you. Buying off ebay means you have to install it yourself =PITA

Every application is different. It depends on your car and the feautres you're installing. It's almost impossible without knowing the wire codes and locations. If you've never done it before though or don't have a good idea of how a relay and diodes work, I wouldn't recommend it.

How familiar are you to the wiring of cars? I would never attempt it only because I am too scared of messing something up bad
