View Full Version : Odd problem..

Well I went to install my new Boston Acoustics mids/highs today. Started with the 6x9's in the front. Before I installed them I decided to listen to the factory speakers up close so I could get a good feel for the levels and volume that they were currently playing at..
Turns out that the two door speakers are barely putting out ANY sound at all. ALso in the front are 2.5" JL tweeters..and apparently this is where all my front staging has been coming from.
I checked all the wiring at the headunit, and at the factory amp and everything is good to go. I checked (for fun) the levels and balancing on the deck, good to go there as well.
So what could be causing my speakers to be like this? I replaced one of the factory 6x9's with a BA thinking that maybe they died, but that speaker did the same thing.
Help!
the tweeter is a lower impedance and is drawing the power...disconnect the tweeter and see if the sound goes back

Beautiful. I will check it out tonight when I get home from work. ;)

Here is another question -
So since the tweeters are a lower imped., does that mean I need to find new ones with a higher imped? There's no way to raise it, is there..
you could add a resistor but thats more work than its worth. Do you know the impedance of the tweeter? you might be able to get a second one and run it in series and up the ohm load... or just find a tweeter that would work with the ohm load.. I

The impedance on the JL SE-40T tweeters is 8 ohms..
The impedance on the Boston Acoustics is 4 ohms..
I do have two running.. one on each channel (in the dash) along with the door speaker.
So I wonder if I shouldn't just disconnect the tweeters....What's odd is that this is the speaker set that is recommended on all the Jeep forum sites for factory replacement because of quality and fitment.. This is just odd that I'm the only one who has had this problem yet. I've posted over there and everyone seems to think I'm an idiot.. I must be missing something.
hmm i was wrong then..the tweeter has a higher impedance... unplug the tweeter and see.. now my thinking is: im assuming the factory amp wants to run at 4 ohms, so now its seeing a wierd load of like 6 ohms... asumming there was a factory tweeter that has since been replaced by the jl. so instead of say 30 wrms, its putting out 18 or so.. and with the reduced power you can barley hear the mid..since the factory x over would limit and high freq going to them anyways, and since the high freq is a little more audible based on proximity to the ear and the ears sensitivty ot high frequencies. try un hooking the tweeter like i mentioned earlier, and if the polk gets louder.. the factory amp might have an x over bulit in..or it was on the back of the speaker. Ahh im rambling..try unhooking the tweeter tonite, see if the new door speakers dont get a decent bit louder

I will try tonight after work and will post results. Thanks dude. ;)

Alright.. well I disconnected both tweeters, but same issue. Still barely any sound coming out of the door speakers. Now I'm REALLY lost.

Do you have a factory amp?

Scratch my last post, just realized you said you have a factory amp in your original post. Bypass it. Alot of times there's all kinds of screwy shit with factory amps...odd ohm loads, crossovers, etc. You're planning on using an MTX amp anyways right?

Yeah, I'd like to use the MTX amp.. This weekend (depending on the storm) I'll go ahead and uninstall the factory amp and replace with my crossover and MTX amp and listen to the factory speakers to see if I notice a difference.. if it's improved, I'll install the door speakers. It'll be quite teh install though. I have two harnesses I have to splice into.. Splicing makes me nervous. ;)
Thanks guys. ;)

bypass the factory amp and run every thing on an external amp or the HU

I should probably be outside doing this now... lol.
