What does RMS on an amp or sub stand for?

continuous power. the peak power is what you're used to seeing, its what the amp can put out at its max for about 1/4 of a second lol. RMS is a lot more useful when deciding what to buy, but that is changing thanks to the consumer electronics agency which is rating all amps now, so it will be a level playing field...so eventually sony won't be allowed to advertise amps as 1200 watts amp when theyre really only about 800.
