View Full Version : S10 front staging

So it looks like I'll be putting a system in my 01 S10 after all (thought I may be selling it but it looks like I'm not). Anyways. The subs are 2 12" Kicker Solobarics (round ones) fed by the big MTX class D amp (forgot model). The fronts are where I have questions. The S10 has dash speakers, and door speakers, but no rear fill. My quandry is whether I should put dash speakers in (since its easiest) or rear fill speakers in (since it should sound better). I'm confident I can build rear speaker enclosures into the sub box, plus I already have a kickass pair of 6x9's to put there, but just curious how everyone feels about all the mids and highs being in the front.
My other option, which sounded good in my last mustang, was a decent pair of Infinity dash speakers wired to the radio with a high frequency crossover just to bring the stage up. I know that you should have the fewest sources of sound possible, so this may not be ideal.
Also, what's everyone doing for the door speakers on an S10? The grills are kinda weird, I was thinking of cutting those out and building some enclosures that angle the speaker more towards the listener, but is it needed?
And finally, I'm toying with the idea of getting a 75x4 MTX amp to match my sub amp (looks wise), how is the sound quality of the MTX amps when used for mids/highs? Nothing sound off quality, but I do listen to more than rap so it has to sound good.

ill be getting an mtx amp for my highs to match my 1501D amp for the subs... i havent heard anythig bad about them..
i personally would put the 6x9 in the back, i think you would get a nicer/more full sound out of it that way.. if you can build them in the back box i think it would be a good idea... also i dont think aiming them at you is that big of a deal, it may help a little bit but its not going to be tremendous, if its easy to do then go for it, but its not worth a shitload of work

MTX amps aren't bad. Invest into a nice component set for the front and forget about the rear, it's just not necessary. You'll achieve a more accurate sound stage.
s10 doors are funny things, at least on my gen. Well... I originall did my comp set in dash and doors, but just sounded wayy off, since the dash and doors are like 270 degrees off axis from each other... the tweets into the glass and the mids firing into the cabin just gave a fucked up stage, with the high freq really just overpowering everythign and with some off delays. so I put the tweets in the doors, but I put them in a real bad place, since i was rushing the job, as per teh norm when you rush, ya dont think so much.
What id reccomend: Some sort of sealed air space for the mids in the doors if you want most any response from them, the doors are huge... you can seal the door off with dynamat to increase output, but i think somehting a good deal smaller would be better. As far as the building a mount to angle the mids, i think only if you made a plate for the tweeter too, or got a set that had a good off axis response. bonus from making a palte to mount on, youd be able to get some airspace to make a sealed enclosure behind the door, since the door speaker (at least in my gen) is mounted about 1/2 inch if not more from the panel and about 2 inches from the metal.
tweeters... Ive seen them up by the door handles, or right on the panel by the mid. If you want to keep your mids in the doors, build what you will first, then move the tweeters around your door with 2 sides tape until you find someplace that makes you happy. (im moving mine to my kicks when i get back to tampa i think.)
as far as rear stage.. ehh id forgo that.. mines still connected right now just because i didnt feel like pulling the head unit to disconnect it.
mtx is a quliaty amp, good for the price

in my old s10 I had some nice ass infinity 4x6 plates in the front and weird lookin pioneer 4x10s in the rear and I couldnt even hear/tell the rears were in. In my 91 s10 it had slots for speakers in the rear, urs doesnt? BTW do U have a single cab s10? How big are those solobarics
