I have the Mach 460 system, and I would like to swap my head unit while retaining the Mach 460 system. Has anyone here done this?

i dont knwo if u can, if so then its liek 20 harneses and shit... cuz nothing but ur tweeters are ran off your head unit, its all ran off the 2 amps mounted up on the top of ur trunk under your 5x7's... suposedly you cant run them all off your head unit cuz there a wierd ohm load
i used to have a link.. the mach 460 is 230 watts... and with all sorts fo shenanignas for ohms and what not

It's a HUGE PITA. Alot of the newer cars, GM in particular, are almost impossible nowadays for aftermarket HU's. Everything is interconnected, so you need multiple adapters and it just turns out to be a HUGE headache.

Was your Mach 460 the one with the Double DIN sized head unit (6 Disc In-Dash Changer)?
If not, then your setup is different from mine.

I am having a shop do it. They said they have adapters to make the Mach 460 work with a new head unit, and that they will not need to cut factory wires. They said that if I wanted to change speakers, however, I will have to upgrade the amps as well at that point (which makes sense).

what shop r u takeing it to ? and if ur going to upgrade ur speakers u wouldnt need all of the harness's just a 4ch amp and a wireing kit ....

I am going to Divine Sounds on Dale Mabry. At first, I will only change the head unit, and stick with mach 460, and maybe add some subs. If I get sick of the Mach 460, then I will upgrade the full range amp and components. For now, I think I will stick with Mach 460, however.

There is a harness that allows you to use all of your Mach system and use an aftermarket hu. There are RCA inputs for the subs so you can actually have control over them if your radio has a sub control. Let me know if you need the part #

I dont have the Mach 1000, just the Mach 460. So no factory subs. But I am gonna put in some aftermarket ones! :)
I wanna go this route cuz I dont want to buy aftermarket full range until later.

good idea.. the mach isnt a bad sounding radio for what it is.. 4 5x7's,both beeing componets with seperate tweeters.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The Mach systems are surprisingly clean for factory, throw in some nice subs and you should be set.

It is clean, but the sound is tinny, and not natural. For now, I can live with that. However, I would like to upgrade to some more natural sounding speakers like the Boston Acoustics, or the MB Quart QSD's.

Your aftermarket HU should make a nice difference though, you'll have the ability to better tweak the sound controls. And with some subs thrown into the mix, you'll be able to back off some of the lower frequencies going to your main speakers now and let them focus more on highs. You'll be playing in a whole new ball game, without a drastic change.

It is true that a major difference would be heard. Kenwood's head unit's have System E's, which have crossovers built into the preamp as well as amplified signals, so I could cut out the low frequencies completely, and let the subs do their work.
However, it takes more than that and an eq to produce natural sound. The tinny sound is due to the materials used in making the speakers themselves.
Nevertheless, it would sound a lot better, you are right.
