View Full Version : box tiime
got the treo and it needs a bigass box. this is coming off memory from what the treo guy told me. i wrote it down but i left it at my buddies. ill update when i get the exact measurements. but i beleive he said the box had to be 4.2 sq ft. and with a port 40 inches long. thing is i dont want the box to take up the whole trunk i had a cool design planned for the side panels on the left and right of the box. . just wondering if u guys could help me out with designing the box giving me different measurements i can use. i never built a box and this really isnt the best sub to go fuckin around with. ill probably have someone help me out with it. thanks guys again.

You're going to need more info than "40 inches long" for the port. You need to know the exact measurements of the port in order to tune it correctly. And as far as the box goes, if you're doing a simple rectangular shape, just experiment with some dimensions and use the formula LxWxH until you get it close to your requirements. Otherwise, if you're going with some funky shape, you can either wing it with a guestimate or make a sturdy mockup and then place a plastic bag (make sure there's no holes in it) and fill it water. Keep track of the amount of water you use and once it's full you'll know the exact volume. Either way, make it a tad larger than the recommendation to compensate for the sub displacement.
thanks, im going to my buddies house now ill post up when i get there. im just gonna use the regular rectangular shape. and im pretty sure the guy said 40 in port.
heres what treo told me to do.
3.5 sq ft.
40 in. port
19.5 in port going into the box.
someone throw my some numbers to use

Like I said...take some measurements of your trunk to see what you have to work with. Play around with the numbers and use the formula length x width x height divided by 1728. That'll give you volume in sq. ft..

MAKE SURE U USE THE ALL MIGHTY MDF BORED!!!!
alright, went out and took some measurements of my trunk space that is available for use. its like 40 in wide, 18 in high, and roughly 21 in deep that hopefully will be enough space to use. might have to rethink the amp rack again but whatever. i got a cool idea of ram head cutouts in some plywood and covering it with plexiglass on the side panels next to the sub. so im going to subtract roughly 20 inches from the 40 inches. so i have 20 left to work with.
i ran some numbers with the formula and this is some measurements thatll work :
17x18x20 / 1728 = 3.54
16x18x21 /1728 = 3.5
17x18x21 /1728 = 3.71
17x17x21 /1728 = 3.51
should i make the box bigger than its supposed to be? only thing really irritated me is that the port has to be 19.5 inches in, why i dont know. whats the port depth have to do with the sound of it. unless im not really understanding the whole 19.5" in. port thing. im thinking from the face of the box the port has got to go back 19.5 in. but i should leave a couple inches also. little help on that one if u could. i made a little picture of what im thinking about doing.
actually am going to use mdf. i had someone to do a fiberglass encloursure for me but i think hes dicking around with me and i dont have time to waste.
now that i think about it, im gonna have to make the box bigger, its a 15" sub i didnt really think of it . think i should make it wider?

lol. Are you trying to be sarcastic because you build your boxes out of plywood? I'm sorry, but ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about audio would laugh at you. Please go to any car audio shop and prove me wrong.

I'd make the box atleast 16" tall, and from your port specs, it sound like you'll have to make the box atleast 23" deep (you usually need atleast 3 or 4" from the end of the port to the back of the box). Keep in mind that you will have to take into consideration the width of the mdf board (3/4")...so work that into your dimensions. I'm not too sure about that "L" shaped port, I would guess it wouldn't work too well. You might want to consider two 10" ports vertically on each side of the sub. I'll try to draw something up for you and post it up. And yeah, you'll probably want to make the box about .2 cubic feet bigger to compensate for the sub's displacement.
*edit*
I just did some calculations and with the given port depth, it's virutally impossible to create a rectangular box much less than 4 cubic sq. ft.. Is the recommended air space they gave you a minimum? Will it work as well/better in a larger box or what?

I'd go with something like this at 23" deep total, ports 19.5" deep....if sub specs allow a slightly larger enclosure.

nice design..
very nice. i didnt think about the two slotted ports. i like that better actually gives it a nicer look. and would work better for me. if i make the box 23" deep ill just have to cut out a chunk in my false floor for my tire well. luckily i havent gotten that diamond plated or itd be pissed. ill probably use ur design. ill call treo one more time to make sure i can build the box bigger than supposed to. the dimensions he gave me are supposed to be so that the sub will play at full potential i guess. ill update.
also got the amp rack to fit today and it looks 10x better. just got to get it fabricated now. thats my aunts job :)
also about ur design the width of the box (16.5) isnt that to small? cause if the port is 2 in. wide thatll leave me 14.5in. of room left the sub wouldnt fit. unless what ur saying is add 2in. to 16.5. then itd make more sense.

i think he means the 16.5 between the 2 ports whcih leaves enough room for a 15..so add 4 inches to the 16.5

For real, basicly any wood beside particle board or MDF will either leak or absorb the sound. Maybe thats why it didnt get that loud ?:?

WHOA WHOA WHOA HOLD ON
before you go and try and make this dual port box, I read dual ports tuned the box differently. Do ur homework b4 u go out and try it. Not to diss you John but before I tryed making a ported box for my type E's outta 4" pvc but a single port wouldnt be enough but if I used 2 it would. I did my research and accually found out 2 ports wont be the same as 1 port. Just a heads up
afboy, u think the L shaped port would be better. cause theres no way im gonna do a 40 inch long port. also lets meet up at the car show and let me buy those fans off u please. really want em now. changed my whole design sorta with my amp rack and xbox better things now.

Eli,
I know ur prolly gonna hate me but im going to be outta town this weekend to chicago so the next time i can go to one is next next friday. If u really need em PM me and ill give u my cell number and we can meet up sometime. As for getting a 40" port, mine is 63" by 3". How is it 63" u ask? it wraps around the back of the box inside, which also acts as a brace.
These plans were made custom for my 15" magnum. 4 cu/ft tuned to 28 hz. If you need box designs, Jmac over on the caraudio.com forums will make them for you for 5" Just tell him what u want. He draws out all the diagrams and tells u all the lengths you need to cut. its nice!

yup yup do ur homework about ports. If u dont and you mess up your box is gonna sound like shit. You could prolly get someone @ caraudio.com to make a box design for a couple of bucs.

ok im a moran :dunno: forgive me for using what is free... and as i said before... does the rubber spray just sit in there for looks????
damn afboy ur diagram freakin confused me, maybe when we meet up u can draw it on paper or something. but yeh lets meet up before u leave. i got time today. or 2morrow after work. probably like after 5. or maybe my buddy can pick em up for me. 10$ right? ima call treo and ask about the 2 side ports.

You think rubber spray on cheap wood undense wood is going to be as good as 3/4" MDF? Wrong, I hope you got ever nook and cranny of the wood with rubber spray with like 3 layers then maybe it might be as good as MDF. Just spend the extra 15$ and cut all the bullshit. If you cant do it right, dont do it at all (then talk shit about people who do do it right.)

another
thats better. i called treo this afternoon the guy said that if i couldnt fit the 19in. deep port that i could wrap it around like u said. so ima do that saves me alot of trouble and worries and now im happy. i think i know what im gonna do now for once. also he said that the bigger the box doesnt mean the better. i should stick around 3.5 for the best results so ima do that. ill draw a picture and post it up. afboy pm me ur cell number so i can get in touch with u. thanks. what area u in also?

this is going to sound really stubborn but i have to ask, cause i need the fans really bad. any chance u can give em to someone on this site that goes to the car shows. like kirk or john or someone and i just pay them? yeh green is perfect. since the xbox is light up green.
ok need some help guys. i need to know how long i should leave for the gaps. i think to eliminate waste im going to nail the sideboards on the sides of the face board where the speaker will be. [| |] something like that where the ([ ]) stands for the side boards.

Eli, you should have went with a sub that performs in a sealed enclosure. It would have been a helluva lot easier. Ported boxes are a major PITA to tune, especially when you have dimensional restrications. I wouldn't stress too much over this, it probably won't be your last box for this sub. This is going to be more of a trial and error type situation...which is the case so many times in car audio unfortunatley.
afboy i tried calling but everytime i do it says u cant be reached or not avaible at the time. maybe ur phones off, or it doesnt like my phone. let me know or jsut call me 968 4979
