View Full Version : MDF isn't airtight, fact or fiction?

I read around and a site said MDF wood isn't completly airtight and that you should run atleast 1 layer of fiberglass resin to plug up all the tiny holes in the wood. So what do you say guys, fact or fiction?

It's probably true in theory but the cone of your speaker probably leaks more air then MDF ever would.
id be mroe worried about seams and terminals before i was worried about the mdf leaking air.

The amount it would leak isn't going to make rat's chance in hell of a difference. Although I have seen people spray that rubber shit or even dynomat the interior of their boxes as an extra precaution. Not really worth it in my opinion.

Fact. Maybe i take my boxes to seoriusly. Fiberglass resin over the entire interior of the box with two layers of fiberglass mat on all the seams.:D No more air leaks.

very nice, I did that once on a box and decided it was over kill and never did it again lol (resin on all the seams with mat)

Major overkill. If you make a box right, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

I just put my boxes together with Liquid Nails and some screws and I NEVER have had an air leak at all. If you make your box correct you shouldnt have a problem.

they are made right but need some extra in it. When you strive to be the best, you need more strength. I got tried of blowing out om seams after a comp so moved up.

Yeah, but couldn't you have just tongue and grooved the joints and/or doubled up the wood along with interior bracing??:?
dropcivic
06-29-2004, 04:55 PM
there was interior bracing inside that is funny part. I almost got to the point of putting some all thread through my box and hold it togther with that. I am trying a new box desgin that involves pvc pipe and shot concerte.:D
im gonna use mdf also, its the 2nd best i think besides fiberglass.

Id rather take shitty box good wood. Why make a good looking box if it sounds like shit. And yeah boxes in the past looked like shit, what am I supposed to be perfect on the first try? Plywood isn't only at a disadvantage because of it's lower density....the fact that it flexes so easily under pressure is also a major flaw. MDF is far superior to playwood anyday of the week, it's the industry standard for box fabrication. Like I said, anyone who knows anything about car audio knows this. Learn from your mistakes....just don't tell anyone because they'll laugh at you. ;)

Yes, i have made a box out of mdf. Worse box i have ever made(for me cheap brother:lol: ). The box flexed and cracked. It sounded like ass, and when the road flexed, you could hear big time distorion. Unless you are using something like 1 and half think pylwood, the box is shit.

ok ur right my boxes flex like crazy and seep out tons of air.. fucking retard ur mdf is flexing more then the plywood jackass, its not ur every day plywood that you prolly made your box out of... 10ply 3/4 inch..your averadge would be 4-5 ply...big diff there so shut up and go try to make ur honda fast

No. Particle board is even worse than plywood...so atleast you did well in that sense. MDF is more of a composite, condensed under extreme pressure to create it's higher density. Hence it's weight.

07-04-2004, 01:42 PM
so its pretty much a very dence particle bored..basically..right?
and im not a complete jackass with it, yes plywood may not be the best choice but i also dont think it was the worst... who cares tho, its my system, im satisfied with it, all my friends seem to like it...and the way it looks :D so thats all that matters

Fibreboard. Bonded under pressure by heat and resin glue. You're right, it probably wasn't the worst choice....I've actually seen boxes made out of cardboard before.

okay dumb ass. I am sponsered by image dynamics and have the loudest dbdrag street b car in the state of FL and 8th in the nation. You think you really want to try talk setups to me? I have learned more about 1/4 theory, standing waves, and physics then most people can even begin to think about. Why don't you go look at some of the loudest setups in the world and see what they are running, plywood or mdf. Here is one that i helped on.

why would i be mad that i drive a ford...spend hours and thousands to make urs the same speed lol... but ok i understand mdf is better wood, its more dence and stuff..but mdf is basically a very dence particle board, so i am told... and im not pushing a bijillion watts threw it iether.. i got 1000rms at 2 ohms. but im runin at 2.6 ohms to 3 subs.. so i guess 850 or so watts divided by 3... i doubt the plywood is flexing..

You'd be surprised actually. To the untrained eye (or ear for that matter) it may seem like no difference...but in actuality, switching to a properly built mdf box could result in quite an increase in both sq and spl. You might want to consider giving it a try...a $20 sheet of mdf, an afternoon, and a few beers could greatly improve your system.
yeah whats the worst that wouldhappen, it sounds worse? back into the other box..
