Why fire up?.. I think that firing towards the rear in the exploder would sound better.. I know it did in my exploder..

Bigger = not always better......

I would think a couple of nice small enclosure 10's with some substantial power would give you something a bit more balanced and still give you all the output you need while maintaining a good portion of the trunk area.

Different strokes......

You'd need some killer 10's to replicate what he's got there. Might not have been the most practical route to take, but big subs/big boxes/big amps is definetly the easiest route to take if you're looking to produce some earth shattering bass.

I can understand that - my last "system" I installed in my company car in Chicago was 2 10" eclipse subs (can't remember the model, they were the high end aluminum cone versions I bought on sale from a place in Wisconsin) with an infiniti class D 1000 watt amp (bought it on clearance from crutchfield at the time) and some infinity seperates powered by another infinity amp throughout the car. I also added a cap and paneled the trunk to make everything look nice. It was balanced, very very powerfull, and with the Kenwood excelon 815 deck I had with the built in crossovers it sounded great. I probably had $1500 in it at most, but I would put it up against anyones I had heard at the time. That was in a vehicle with no easy opening from the trunk to the passenger area, so I can only imagine how much more powerfull it would have sounded / felt in the great expanse of an SUV.

I would probably never ever own another system based on sound output alone, had too many "boom" systems back in high school when it first got popular.

By the way - I'm not usually a fan of infinity either - but they worked well in that system.

Agreed, but $299 for their class D amp at the time was a steal! Hell I made $100 when I sold it, lol!!!!

The speakers were always a bit too "cold" for me, but for some reason in that car they had a soft sound to them.

I would agree. My 3 JL 10's are in a (guestimates, I can't remember offhand) 36" x 12 x 12 enclosure.. 3 seperate 12" squared sealed "enclosures" in a single box.. I wouldn't have it any other way...

Of course, each sub and setup requires something different..

Fireing up sounds cleaner in my explorer. Fireing it towards the hatch is louder but has more rattles.

i think they were joking when they said they think the box needs to be bigger. and i just wanted to try something new, ive had 10's, 12's and now im tryin 15's. Wally how much louder was it when u fired it toward the rear?

SSpiro

When I had my explorer a few years ago, there was a noticable difference, as Derek123 mentioned.. Firing up was cleaner with less rattles, but definitely not as loud or as tight as it was versus firing to the rear... Firing to the rear allows for tighter acoustics, and better sound projection off of the hatch.. but more rattles..which is easily fixable.

Makes sense if you think about it.. If you fire rear, it bounces off the hatch and back towards you.. If you fire up, it bounces off the roof and back at the sub...

derek, when you had that big box in there and you couldnt sit in the car for more than a song without your ears hurting, was that towards the rear or up?

Have you even tested it yet? You might want to wait to be pissed until after you actually get the sub in and take a listen....:dunno:

Derek

well i think that was to the rear.... i ended up facing it up because the box slid and the sub hit the hatch. Right now its faceing the rear and seems to be louder.
