I'm looking to co-drive with someone. I'll donate to your tire and maintainence fund. (Or, if you have a mustang with 5 lug wheels, I'll bring along my R compound tires and we can run those... eh? )

In case you didn't know, if you are running novice class.....they won't let you take anyone with you except for an instructor/seasoned staff type person. Just for handy reference. :)

Hmm very tempting that site is about 10 min form my new house, but my car is in no shape to hit an auto-x,the ITR is close to 100k miles an starting to seem like it needs a little refresh.
PseudoRealityX
06-20-2004, 04:42 PM
my car has been daily driven and autocrossed since it had ~20,000 miles on it. It's about to roll over onto 140,000 and it still dynos close to any ES MR2 out there.
the ITR doesn't need a refresh. Stop making excuses and drive:)

the 240 is close to 145k, autox and drift for the last 50k....hondas just aren't up to par with nissans and toyotas?
krekavhts
06-21-2004, 01:27 PM
don't know about that. my integra GSR has 124k and has the original clutch and has been autox'd since 65k miles. plus 89 civic si's dyno more hp now than they did new. most honda motors don't hit there peak break in until after 100k miles, as long as they are treated proper and given proper service intervals. type r's on the other hand have had a tendancy to burn lots of oil once they hit aroud 40 to 50k miles requiring new rings and seals. most of that however is from jackasses not breaking them in right or putting in synthetic oil before the break in period is over.

here's a story for you.
This past weekend at the Divisional, Karen Kraus had her FS Chevy CAMARO running. She drove all the way from Maryland. The car hit 300,000 miles on the way back, and has only had the heads off once for a head gasket at 250,000 miles.
Car has been daily driven, autocrossed, drag raced, and tracked since it was bought new in '96

06-21-2004, 09:27 PM
wow, a chevy going 300,000 miles without a rebuild, that's impressive!
i'm not gonna be driving my car at brooksville as it's nearing 50,000 miles & seems like the motor needs to be rebuilt cuz autoxing is so hard on the engine:lol:

My stinkin' eco motor is at 88,xxx miles and is still working fine. My gearbox, though, that's a different story. I also need some tie rod bushings because i'm either going crazy or my front wheels are starting to point opposite directions. anyone got any extra money lying around?

Yes, this would be a good place to start. Come on Saturday, it will be more laid back. Requirements are: registering on the website listed above, being there BEFORE 9AM and expecting to stay until 4-5PM, having a clean (no loose items) and safe car, having a driver's license, and paying $30.
That is it, no special equipment needed.

SCCA usually checks 4 things:
Wheels secure
good pressure on the brake pedal
loose items
battery secure
If you car is in good operating condition, that is all you need to worry about.

07-04-2004, 09:28 AM
I think the relevant question is how broken is it and where?
Most autox tech inspectors are reasonable people. If it's just a crack and it's not right in front of the driver's face, it's probably okay.
Leonard
07-04-2004, 10:00 AM
Normally when I'm running tech, I will say something about a cracked windshield. If it doesn't obstruct visibility, I'll request that the individual wear a full face helmet WITH VISOR for their runs. My concern is that something causes the windshield to break further (a rough off course excursion or somehow a cone getting flipped up into the air and causing a cone to hit their windshield) during their run and they get some glass shards in their face. I make a not of their car number and try to check in on them later in the day too.
ill take a pic of it later... thx guys
heres apic of the driver view

07-04-2004, 12:57 PM
Mmmm.... I'd have a hard time passing that one. Two things. First if you're taller than about 5'2, that spiderwebbing (sorry, just saw Spiderman 2) is right in your field of vision. Second, like Leonard said, a good bump could have glass fragments coming your way.
But, I have nothing to do with this Brooksville event (but I'll be there on Sunday!), just offering an opinion.

If you have insurance on this car, then the insurance company will fix it with no deductable. (Even if you jdo not have full coverage it is covered).
Unless you bought the car with the broken windsheild.
They will even replace it at your home or work.
Just a thought.
Eddie
bought the car with the windshield like that, although i do have a full face helmet with a face sheild. So i would not pass for sunriders?

Probably not. If it were left up to me, I'd have to see where you sit in the car and how it really affects visibility. If I could live with that, I might let it go with a full-face.
You have to look at it from our perspective. Weird stuff happens in motorsports that simply can't be predicted. Let's say something happens and you hit a worker on course. Or you blow a turn on course and hit a big pot hole dislodging one of those chunks of glass and it hurts you or your passenger. If we allowed you to pass tech with a windshield that, waiver or not, and even if it has nothing to do with the defect, we could be held liable for that. Our world is ruled by lawyers.
I'm sure finding a used replacement windshield for a Merkur would be difficult, but have you tried calling Safelite? Nevermind autox tech, you could easily get a ticket for that windshield.
Leonard
07-04-2004, 02:47 PM
If I were doing tech, I'd have to say no. That said, you could lobby the CSS (chief safety steward) at the event to allow it. When it's all said and done, it's their call because they're the responsible party on the insurance paperwork.
Honestly, the people I have allowed with cracks have had a single crack that did not run the entire length of the windshield and did not go through the entire windshield. And I've requested that each of them get it replaced before the next event they attend.
A good indicator is the safety glasses you have on the dash...

NitrousAcid069, I just merged your thread with this one. (I had to flex that moderator muscle just once... ooooh, the power...)
For the newbs among us, remember that when you post to an existing thread, it gets bumped to the top of the list. So if you're just creating a new thread to be more noticable... well, you don't really have to.
Also, consider that this well-established thread already has a fair number of people watching it, so they're going to get notified of the replies. All the right people will see your question that way. Cool, eh?
Multiple threads on the same topic can get confusing because it makes answers harder to find later.
To answer the question... if you've read the sticky posts and maybe anything you can find on the CFR website, and in this case, especially the event flyer (because the site is "controlled" and that is a relevant fact), you should be good. Just make sure your car is in good condition and safe and go. Let folks know it's your first time, there are always people willing to help. In spite of the attitudes we sometimes get on the forums, most of us are pretty cool people in person and enjoy spreading the gospel of the orange cone.
PS: Am I supposed to know what a d16y8 is? We're not all Honda fans in here.

Just make sure you're preregistered. when you show up for on-site registration let them know it's your first event. They'll tell you how to get your car teched and point out a novice instructor for you. They'll be a novice walk through prior to the drivers meeting so all the newer folks will walk the course with an experiance driver who'll point out the basics for you.

Check with the event chairman before you go setting that up. I know the fairgrounds requires that only 'approved vendors' sell ANYTHING at events there (and of course said vendors have paid for that right). I don't know if the Brooksville Airport has any similar requirements.

stupid laws. it is a good point though, i doubt that the airport will allow open grilling even though we are on a closed runway. I would think that the smoke might alarm a few people out there. Not to mention you have to be very careful on the grounds of this place as 1 side of the apron is farm land and i don't think they even want us standing in that grass.

The MSSC usually always had a hotdog stand guy come out to their events way back when I used to regularily attend their events.
The porsche guys, thanks to a sponsor, and the sunriders also supply lunch.
I think it sucks that none of the SCCA events seem to give any attention to having food provided for at the event.
I find its usually a good way for people to all hang out together and chat.

It is sort of favored in this area, and it's certainly not universal. But in FL in the summertime, it's kinda nice to get to take a break mid-day.
There are a lot of different ways to run an autocross, some better than others, and none necessarily "the best".
One of the most interesting methods I've heard of was Nebraska Region SCCA (yep, right there in Omaha). They don't have run groups like most autocrosses. I don't remember how they handle workers, but they run ALL registered cars through the course for their first run before they start second runs. They claim this helps with cameraderie because people have a lot more time to chill out between runs (tweak tire pressures, adjust shocks, swap springs, change an engine... whatever you need to do), and the format also requires everyone to stick around all day. I suppose it has its pros and cons like every other method, but they like it.
Back on topic... given that providing lunch seems to be the norm for this area, I agree that CFR should perhaps try to follow suit. It's a minor pain in the butt, but it's getting to where people expect it.
NitrousAcid069
07-10-2004, 12:04 PM

They do the super long rungroup thing in Palm Bay and I have mixed opinions about it. Yeah, it gives people time to mingle and time to 'fix' their cars, but I'd prefer to have my runs in short succession. The course conditions are likely to be more consistant. I tend to be more consistant because I can get into more of a mentally focused state rather than running and gossiping and running and gossiping. I don't really think it takes that long to change pressure in tires and would rather have my runs 20 minutes apart than 2 hours.

Nobody does. I can vouch for that.
I first saw this on the wall in a parts store when I was in my teens:

Well, I wussed out. After working all day Saturday, the thought of sleeping in Sunday morning appealed to me. The weather didn't help to change that decision.
How did it go?

i was there on sat...it was a lot of fun and i got some good experience...i had 7 good runs and on my last damn run i messed up pretty bad....but i was turning some decent times toward the 5,6,7th run....my best time of the day was a 63.4...i only had 2 DNF's, my 2nd and my 8th run.. ..i was happy with that considering it was my first time ever autocrossing....

I punked out on Sunday, too... I think I got dehydrated at the practice on Saturday or something. I woke up all woozy and nausiated today. :-(
But I've got to say, Saturday was one of the best days autocrossing I've had in a long time! The course layout was awesome (Thanks, Jim!), the site was great, and it seemed like it ran pretty smoothly (despite a couple of timing issues). I really look forward to more events at Brooksville!

Saturday was cool. I ran pretty good. My best time was a 60.xx. Was my first time out so I a blast. Even though I was seriously hurting from riding BMX the night before I had to go. Sunday was way to wet for me. I showed up but I didnt register since i know my car is horrible in the rain. I will have to go out to the next one! Had a great time.
The event was a lot of fun.
We are going to have an event there every month. Next one is scheduled for August 28-29. Details will hopefully be coming soon.

make sure you please post the details in the autox forum....i know a lot of ppl that said they should have went....but they didnt find out till after the reg. date...ohh well too late for them...do you think next time, we could do the track mostly where all the cars were paked this past time....i think it would be a lot less confusing if the clear spot of the runway was where the course layout was....
just my .02 though....

I was there Sunday. I had a good time, despite the weather. The runway is very well built, I was really impressed with how well the water drained.

Are you saying that the grass growing in the cracks made the course confusing? The manicured part of the runway is where they do the Motorcycle Safety Courses. There are going to be times when we run at the same time as them, so we can't use it, and honestly we want to use a LOT larger portion of the runway than they use.
We made the course more user friendly on Sunday. But it does take a long time to get used to these type of courses. I didn't get the hang of Ft. Myers (similar course setup) until my 3rd or 4th visit there.
Anyway, for the next event we should have the the grass cut down and course maps available for everyone. That should make it easier for newer people.

I was there on Saturday - I had a good time. My best time was a low 50.xxx. Still off the pace of Hector by a little bit, but his regular attack on the cones helps me stay in contention.
The rain convinced me to not drive up on Sunday. It was awfully wet in my neck of the woods.

i do agree with that though...if we did it in the clear spot it would be a bit small....i do think we should cut down the grass next timeand have course maps available though

I was out there about 2 months ago with 8 people spraying roundup. Obviously, keeping the grass down is going to require regular work.
I nominate you for the position of Grass Removal Chairman. :-D

I like him. He sounds like he wants to volunteer. Welcome to the club. Make sure to join the yahoo group at:

By the time the first group was done with their runs, the grass on the line was pretty much gone. I didn't have a problem with it. :-)
If one were so motivated, one could even knock down the big clumps in the racing line with a string trimmer at the beginning of the day... :D Probably less work than trying to kill ALL the grass and keep it dead...

Back in 1983, I arrainged for CFR to use a runway at the Dunellon airport, near Ocala.
Activity was so low at the airport that grass was a problem wherever there was a crack in the pavment. It was asphalt, not concrete.
The airport had a device made from a large 6 foot long ibeam that one could drag behind a vehicle which would scrape the pavement and remove most of the grass. Then all one had to do is to sweep the line.
I tried the roundup thing there, and it did no good at all.
Ask the Brooksville airport folks for their advice in dealing with the grass. They may have some good suggestions. Hopefully they will see that we can help improve their site.
BTW, also in the 80's, when we ran at Sebring, only the regular racing line was kept clear of grass, which caused the same problems when the autocross course was set up off the racing line.

well, I woke up late on Saturday....would've had to bust ass to make it by late registration. I also noticed that it was raining pretty hard outside my window, so I glanced at the radar and saw rain headed towards brooksville. Decided to just go back to bed.
Weather looked better on Sunday, and I had a co-driver waiting on my anyways, so off I went. D'oh!
Ended up only getting two runs, my co-driver and I threw on some hoosiers after it looked like it was gonna dry up...then had to change the fronts again because the hoosiers were too wide, so we ended up burning up a run doing that. He got in a good semi-dry run, just in time for it to start monsooning again for my run....I made it a couple gates past the slalom before I got tired of spinning out.
