D1 Drivers search is being held on Saturday in Miami. I was at the D1GP site when I read this: "Drivers who place in the top 10 at this event may be invited to the qualification round of the D1 Grand Prix Driver Search Championship in December"

Top 10 in Miami gets invites to Cali???? :o :o :o

Hmmmm.....
Erik
Matt
Bill
Rob
Taylor
who else?

I am so excited (even though I won't be there till Sunday!)

this is supposed to be an "east coast driver search"....so there could be a lot of people there who aren't locals

not to knock the local talent, but this event is going to be huge. I'll be surprised if even 2 of the people we know will make the top 10 cut.

we have no idea what kind of people will be coming to this event.. $$$$

i agree with teddy, er, ucfz31s13. knowing who else lives on the ENTIRE east coast, there will be a hell of a lot of skilled drivers there. ill be driving (hopefully) but im doing it just for seat time and a chance to make love to uenos hachi.

All I know is it will be sick. The action will be sick. Like I said A games and top cars. Don't be suprised if some west coast guy's go.

a sil80 is simply a 180sx with a silvia front end, which would definately qualify the enjuku car as a sil80...but their are lots of names to call almost every car

i suppose..

traditional Sil80's tend to have S13 front ends, but i suppose S15 silvia still classifies as sil 80..

noone from tampa got the invite to qualify for D1 Cali

however Mattback and DG Eric made it to the final 7 and were cut after that

You can honestly see who had the potential to make it and win..to be even considered to qualify for D1 you almost have to be able to drive at the Pro Level and these Pros were many fold at a higher level than most of the tampa/ east coast people.

until you see Yamamoto enter the first sweep at 162kmph and combo the entire course in under 5 seconds...you cant really judge on who is "good" at drift.

being "good" is just not good enough sometimes

i have to agree..

from spectating the saturday to driving it sunday... it most deffinetly seperates the two. I was EXTREMLEY IMPRESSED BY THOSE WHO MADE IT IN THE TOP 7 (they were picked for a reason) and those who didnt did well too.

Once I got out there, and felt the elev. changes... and how different it was, all my comments from saturday (i.e. wow why cant (so and so) nail that turn ) so on had changed. It was extremley different thats for damn sure. Overall I had an amazing amazing time, Wesley, taka, koji taught me so much (though theres no way at that moment i could imitate on a course like that what they taught me on flat pavement. I am just glad i was given the oppourtunity to go out there, participate, meet these great people and have a blast.

Oh and totally have the greatest luck and win falken tires! Hey someone had to

The 3 lucky people who *DID* make it were:

Vaughn Gittin (JR) -- DG Ace and all around good guy
Calvin Wan -- Falken's "#1" driver and interesting character
Tony Schulz -- DG regular, good kid, and amazing driver

The others to make it to the "final round" (which was a total surprise):

Tony Hart (Mazda Rev-It-Up! index driver and longtime racer)
Mattback from SS
Ben Schwartz (Florida's drifting star)
Erik Jacobs (yours truly)
Hiro Sumida from Drift Association

The level of talent of this group of people is really high. Basically, the D1 judges (Keiichi, Nomuken, and one other guy) were mainly concerned with entry speeds, shortly followed by racing line. I ran some 225 tires in the rear on Sunday for some practice runs (I left early) and was able to increase my entry speeds by almost 10-15mph (coming in middle of third). Having more tire out back really helps to make the car more predictable and settled going sideways at really high speeds. I think that I'd like to upgrade to 235s for the rear. This will give a good balance of spinability (is that even a word?) and high-speed control.

At first I was worried about the facility being a little spooky for some of the newer drivers and lower powered cars, but in the end I think it really worked out nicely. I'd like to have another event there in the future, but I'm not too sure if the facility management is going to be keen on having us back. Like Rob said -- being able to do some nice high speed stuff was fun. It was a first for me and I'm glad I got to do it. However, without building a good foundation and understanding of how the vehicle moves at low speeds, doing the high speed stuff could result in some pretty disastrous vehicle behavior. So be happy that you guys are getting to practice at such wonderful facilities like Primus -- it's going to pay off for you tremendously in the long run.

never tried going into the corner without downshifting...I was having fun using shift-lock in 2nd to feint into the series though.

drifting on that track makes me dislike primus even more...

I honestly didn't want to wreck my street car, but towards the end of Sunday, I was getting a bit more ballsy with the entry speed.

Primus is a nice place but I feel I really can't progress much further on that course. It's almost Gymkhana. If we could find a venue that is all 2nd and 3rd gear, that would be killer. The more advanced drivers I am sure could still cope with even a KA as long as speeds are kept up, but 250-300hp is prolly needed to really drift a course like that.

BTW in case anyone thinks I have huge power, I'm prolly making like 170 rwhp in a 3100lb car.

-Sean

PS I think I did good this weekend, and wish I had a better setup / more power, but I was still definitely humbled by the course and watching the pros.

:bigthumb: I got there late sunday, but everyone I saw did really well.

Best part of the day, though, wass when this kid thought that by watching good people drift all day, he was magically endowed with the power to drift. After his failed drift attempt, well this visual will help.

Even Though no one was "invited" I'd like to look at it this way.

A little over one year ago they held the first drift showoff at irwindale speedway - I was there. At that event there were local drivers and the pros just like we had here. As a whole the drifting I saw from the locals was WAY better here than it was at the event in california. A year later many of those locals are now considered pro - I'd expect nothing less will happen here!

Yea, tried to drift, but failed. Sorry for the late response, but I'm in Trinidad at the moment.
