View Full Version : The Best Bang for your Buck...

I'm in the market for a mkiii and I hope to have enough near the end of the summer to buy one, and possibly swap it....now this is where my question comes into play, seeing as how I don't know much the motors them selves... which would be the better bang for my buck? the 1G-GTE, or....the 1JZ-GTE? I've been doing some reading and seems that many conversations have gone on about the rival between the two...I was just wondering this way I don't come a sucker in the end.

ok, here are the facts and you make your own decision.
1ggte= never in the US, only 2.0L and only makes like less than 200hp. in Japan this was the base model supra's engine. absolutly no aftermarket support here in the US.
1jzgte= ok, comlpete aftermarket support and oem parts support here in the states. makes almost 300 to the wheels stock, can be made to make 1000hp.
the 1ggte would be a neat swap for something smaller like a corolla or celica. but to push a 3500lb+mk3 around you need power and TQ which the 1gg doesn't have. i would have to say that i would most definitally go with the 1jzgte no questions asked. in japan the 1gg is a different story because they were put in everything (due to the over 2.0L tax) so they made a 1gfe, 1gge, 1ggze, and the 1ggte.

Gotta second Hachi Bill on this one. Wasn't the 1jzgte a Yamaha design like the 3s-gte? My gen3 3s-gte doesn't even say toyota anywhere on it. Anyway, the 1j is an amazing engine that just wants you to let it make more hp. You can get them for about what toyota dealerships charge to fix a BHG on a 7m-gte anyway.

I drove a Single 1G with a few upgrades . Its a ncie motor I guess over there . I saw a couple modified 1G's .
Yea shotakhan prices and all the taxes put upon hte car go down drastically with having a 2litre and under car .
TA-45 Single turbo kit @ 15psi = fun .. I was told it dynoed 437RWPS ...
Stock motor too just a metal HG and tuned ECU with bigger injectors

the 1jz will no doubt out perform the 1g.

Oh yea . No doubt .
Just stating that the 1G is a better motor oversea's for reasons other than power .
I definately back the 1JZ over the 1G

any toyota motor that has a G series head means it was designed by yamaha. which means it was a performance head with a different bottom end to support the performance of the head. an F series head has a narrow valve angle and was designed for everyday use and gas mileage. and the bottom ends were weaker. yamaha has been helping to design and build toyota heads since the 60's when the 2000GT came out. which shares the same engine family lines as the 4me, 5me, 5mge, 7mg/gte. so you can say that the chevy small block has been around but its also true of toyota motors as well.

why thank you. were you at the last meet@ft.desoto?
yes, yamaha has been designing the heads for top end performance motors from toyota way back in the 2000gt days.
the 2000gt is sooooo badass for the time that is came out.
the 1g-was offered in gtte, ge, and fe head designs i belive.
the same with the 1jz.
this is funny, i was hell-bent on getting a 1g-gtte for my supra, thinking ya know, 2.0 high revving straight six. get some lighter pistons, high profile cams, stiff springs and harded valves and rev it to 8-9k rpm or more. than i found out that NOBODY makes shit for that motor AND it only has 197 hp. screw that in the 3500lbs tank.

I would only go with a 1jz if the 7m was blown up , I like the sound of the 7m alot more , plus I just dont like the fact of having a small displacement I-6 I would rather have a 2jz or 7m 3 litters sounds better.
1jz doesn't sound too bad but i like the 2jz sound better any given day.

u would:lol: imo i like the 7m motor if your ofcourse on a budget ,it supplies well enough, this will be again shortly when i can finally get anther one...the 1j is very nice but i dont think i could upkeep it ...7m's do sound nice from the straight 6 but whatever

No, I wasn't at the meet. But ever since I seen your car (through the pics...all I could think was Supra)...and I'd totally choose a turbo Supra, over a NA honda any day. Because it was a toss up between the two...and I chose to go the supra route....because it seems EVERYONE wants a hatchback...and this just seems alittle off beat to me...which totally fits my personality (since everyone that knows me thinks I'm goofy as hell)

thanks. cant wait for the carbonfiber front lip to be finished. it will be a new product from carbonfiberFX.com
that and the abflug rear bumper trim will keep it stock, yet agressive.
