I really want a C5 corvette. What is the best year to get? I want the strongest motor. I can’t afford a brand new one or a Z06 so that’s out of the question. And if I got this car what mods would I need to do to get it into the 11’s. Should I get an auto or 6 speed? Im new to the corvette/domestic seen what would you do in my case?

well all 98 or 97+ vettes use the ls1 engine which is a alsome powerful moter the 01+ vettes ls1 engines are more powerful do to the ls6 entake manifold, and some other minor changes. an 01+ vette= can probaley run low thirteens to high 12's bone stock with a good driver, to get into 11's some boltons, cam,headers exsults(sry if spelled wrong) some DR's. intake, you can go nitrous. theres many things you can do. has of automatic or 6speed, the 6speed is well i think ugely is a lil quicker, but you throw a touqre converter in that auto, and youll proably be quicker.

C5's are awesome!! good luck w/ your hunt.
you still got love for the Nissan though right :mad:
I'd get a zr-1 dude. It's a c-4, but one can be had for $20k or less in some cases. the 90-92's we're 385 HP and the 93-95's were 400 HP. It has a DOHC 350 with forged piston/rods/crank.

Get a 99 fixed roof coupe. Or FRC for short. It was the predacessor to the Z06 and was VERY light. Only made in 99. Great car to mod...only came in 6 speed. Get a LS6 manifold (399) and a good size cam (about $450 plus install), headers ($799 and up), and a good clutch and youll have a low 12 high 11 second daily driver that will trap in the 115-120 range depending on cam. Still get 25 mpg and be dialy drivable.

GET A ZR1 IF YOU CAN!!!!!
Get a 93-95 zr1. They are the best years. Plus they have the updated c-4 body which looks better. They are just so cool. An all aluminum motor, HEMI style heads, and variable intake runners, there are actually butterflies in the intake that open up larger intake runners when you are at either 50% throttle or i think about 3500 rpm. They are just the baddest vette ever made. You could put just a few mods and beat damn near anything on the street. And 405 hp doesn;t begin to describe what the motor really has!

Nice pic, but that's not a zr-1 engine.

My Dad just bought a 99' Corvette, the hard top, Many people mistake it for the Z06 with the body looking like the Z06 and the rims and the Z06 side wheel fenders. It's also 6speed and I'm very impressed with its beauty and proformance.
Here is a picture before my Dad bought it from the dealer. (These are dealr pics.)

ZR-1’s were produced from 1990-1995. There were a total of 6939 ever produced in the 6 years of the ZR-1’s. 1995 was the last year for the production of ZR-1’s.
In 1995, there were only a total of 909 Bright Aqua Metallic Corvettes produced; only 13 of them were produced as ZR-1's. Number #389 is the last of the 13 Bright Aqua ZR-1’s off the line that was built in 1995 and also making it the last Bright Aqua ZR-1 ever built.
Of the 13 1995 ZR-1’s, 6 of them were built with Black interior and the other 7 were with Gray interior. This car happens to be a late production car, built on Thursday April 6th, 1995. The very last ZR-1 produced off the production line is #448, which was built on 4/24/95.
All in all there were only a total number of 53 Bright Aqua ZR-1's ever produced during the running of the ZR-1’s from 1990-1995. Bright Aqua was only available from 1992 on up. Bright Aqua is the rarest color second to Dark Purple which is the rarest color with a total of only 25 ZR-1's ever produced in Dark Purple.
This car also came with the late model LT5 heads; produced by A.L. Dunn Inc. Dunn heads came on about 130 ZR-1's built in 1995 most likely the last 100 cars. There were some earlier 95's that ended up with the Dunn heads. The rest of the cars came with the earlier Birmal heads.
The list of options on the ZR-1 Special Performance Package includes:
* 5.7 LT5 SFI DOHC 32-Valve V8 Engine
* P275/40ZR/17 Front Tires & P315/35ZR/17 Rear Tires
* 17 X 9.5 Front & 17 X 11 Rear Styled Aluminum Wheels
* Heavy Duty Brake System
* Selective Ride & Handling Control
* Electronic Air Conditioning
* Leather Adjustable Sport Seats
* 6-Way Driver & Passenger Power Seats
* Low Tire Pressure Warning System
* Special Side Body Panels
* Special Solar Ray Windshield
* Delco-Bose AM/FM Stereo CD & Cassette Audio System
The ZR-1 option was priced at $31,258.00 additional over the standard base Corvette
This car also has the dual roof package option.
Making the total price of a 1995 ZR-1’s at $69,553.00.
The LT5 engine was a brand new designed from the ground up in England by Lotus Engineering for the ZR-1 and assembled by Mercury Marine engines out of Stillwater, Oklahoma. The LT5 is an all aluminum pent roof combustion chamber designed engine with 4-cams and 32-valves which produces 405 hp @ 5,800 rpm and 385 ft lbs @ 4,800 rpm with a redline of 7200 rpm. The LT5 engine is a factory production engine capable of pushing the ZR-1 Corvette to speeds well over 180+ mph.

Sad that you can get them for low 20's now. That is alot of depreciation.

The going price for a low mileage ZR-1 is around $20,000. Parts are supper expensive, so unless you have a LOT of extra cash around, don’t get one. Hop on a couple of ZR-1 boards and check out the cost of parts and how they fail frequently. Also, GM no longer supports this engine, so the parts that are left are drying up fast.
Stick with a C5, great aftermarket support. Auto or 6-sp just comes down to personal preference. A lot of drag racers like autos and road racers like the 6-sp.

Absolutely right. ZR-1s are outdated and with a DOHC motor, you will be racking up the bills in mods. Get a C5 LS1, it doesn't matter what year. The LS1s make sick power and as someone stated earlier, a stock C5 could run high 12s-low 13s (my LS1 T/A did 13.47 bone stock). Getting into the 11s is no problem with a LS1 motor, many guys have done it with cam alone. LS1s take very well to mods, you could easily put in a G5X3 cam and dyno 400+rwhp and run in the mid-high 11s on stock heads. As far as auto vs. manual, it's preference. If you want a track car, I recommend an auto for consistancy. If it's a driver, get the 6 speed because you will enjoy it so much more. FYI, most A4 C5s dyno around 320 to the wheels and M6s are a bit higher at 330 average. Getting a 01+ will give you an LS6 intake to start with, but they can be picked up for cheap anyhow.
I would recommend doing a few more mods than just the cam, but I was just giving you an example of the LS1's potential.
