Iam wondering what tire pressure runs the best for you guys with street tires at the track? I have heard not to go any lower than 20psi on street tires? I usually bring mine down to 23 or so psi and dont really play with it, since Iam trying to tune my Holley and spend my time playing with the carb. I dont want too many variables when tuning the carb.

My experiance with street tires depends on many variables. Tire compound is the most important. A few tips, do not go in the water. This traps water between the threads and releases when you launch resulting in poor traction. Do not change the tire pressure. Lower pressure changes do nat effect launch. Track condition,no water and soft compound tires are what you look for.

Low pressure on street tires causes the tread to spread resulting in less rubber on the track surface. Low pressures with drag radials or slicks cause the same spreading effect, however these tires are of a very soft compound and are designes to spread causing 100% rubber contact with the track.

In summarry, when on street tires and trying to be competitive from a launch, either use the bog and go or the slip method of launch. You will see that you will be effective and CONSISTANT.

So keep the psi where the tire specifies? mine says 44psi I think that is high.

I know about the water and soft compund. Also, know not to burn out too long, just burn out to clean the tires.

44psi max probably, I'd run around 30-32 if I was you depending on tire profile.

I run about 12 in my slicks and 15 in my dr's when I had them.

My tires are 205/60/13's

86T rubber compound? something like that . . .

What are your 60ft times away? You can't expect much from a 205 radial.

That's my point Show. Most guys want (and rightfully so) their street tires to hook up, but those tires were designed (the 205's) to commute with and pass DOT standards for safe driving.

Those tires have no usefull range for performance since they simply arent performance tires.

I don't know what to tell you exept good luck finding a combo that works. There are many issues to consider when selecting a replacement tire for performance also. Such as, rim width (which I see abused all to often) also too soft of a conpound which then disturbs the suspension, causing wheel hop, spring compression and destroyed driveline components.

Good luck and stay safe.

30 psi sounds good?

I think I will go with that, for now.

30psi would be good, what kind of 60ft times do you turn?

Iam looking at an old slip here, and it says:

rt - .636
60ft - 2.286
mph - 73.52
et - 9.673

That is not on the present tires Iam speaking of. Those were old dry rotted and 185/75/13's, at lakeland's non vht using ass track!

So if your running 9.5 with the same hp then your probably doing 2.1's or 2.0's ... I doubt you will be able to do better than that on regular radials.

I think I will go with 30psi in the rear tires and 44psi on the front. Until I get the carb runing better, than focus my attention on my tire pressure, probably drop to 25 psi and see where it takes me?

You could, but it won't do any good ... regular radials don't respond well when air is take too low.

You definately need drag radials man. I am running street tires and my 60ft is the same as yours.

Makes a big difference on my street tires as far as launch goes when i drop the pressure down to 23. I run 2.5 60ft's with reg pressure at 35 and run 2.375 with the tire pressure at 23. I use Fulda Assuro 195/60/15's.

I have similar thoughts, and have read the same also in some drag secrets article(they said not to go below 20psi with street tires). But since Iam trying to tune my carb, I cant have too many variables. Iam going with 30spi until I get my carb where I want it, or I decide to lower the pressure? I will keep it posted, Iam planning on going to Sunshine tonight.

i always just pick up some all season tires for out back use... drop the psi to like 18...

I think around 20psi-25psi hooks better than anything higher. I lied to myself about not messing with my tire pressure. I didnt in when I first got to the track, but after I kept on spim\nning the hell out of them over and over. I figured it wouldnt hurt to try. And it hooked up better with a lower psi. So for now on I will drop my pressure to about 23psi give or take.
