Where is it going to be at. Im thinking about starting to autocross. I live in town and country. If someone can give me directions or they are willing to let me follow them there I would appreciate it. Thanks
take Memorial, to 275 south, onto the howard franklin bridge, take that across go though St pete till 22nd AVe? I think its after the big bend past downtown st pete, then get off make a right, till you hit 19 then make a left, look for a big blue buidling on your left that says SPC allstate

What's a slalom got to do with brakes? :)
Okay, here's the deal... we can't please everyone all the time. People complain where there are slaloms in every course. People complain when there isn't a slalom in the course. People complain when the course is too slow... then complain that the faster cars have an advantage when the course is faster. It's a no-win situation for a course designer... especially on a tiny little site like SPC.
What am I saying? Quit bitching and just make the most of the challenge that is presented to you! OR... join the club and volunteer to be an event chairman, then YOU can design a course.
(all that being said, I've not even seen a course draft for this event yet, so I can't give you any hints on what it will be like this time)

I will be there. My wife is "NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT", because I will not be at her sister's house, with the rest of the extended family, celebrating the day. (Which has always seemed ridiculous to me since none of them are Christian.) Quite frankly I'd rather go have a root canal than go to the Easter celebration so this works out really well for me. Can we schedule an AutoX for next easter too? ; )
Loren
04-05-2004, 08:48 AM
This one just happened by accident. I didn't plan it to be on Easter, I just picked the date based on where it was on the calendar! I like holiday events, myself. Labor Day and Memorial day are good, too. They are all days when most people don't have to work.
I've done an Easter autocross before, though. It's kinda strange. There are those who say "You're doing an autocross on Easter??? Nobody will come!" And it is true that attendance will probably be a little lower than usual... but there will still be a lot of people there.
To help with folks who have kids to hide eggs for or church obligations, there will be a second opportunity for registration during the lunch break (about 12:30-1:00, somewhere in there). No guarantees that the late registrations will get as many runs as the early ones, though! (if there are just a few, they will, but if there are LOTS of them, we may have to cut them short to get finished on time) So be there early if you can.

The insurance company requires that all waivers be on their original forms. (probably so that no one can say that the copy was crappy and they couldn't read what it said, that sort of thing) All of the forms are kept in our equipment trailer over in St. Pete, so I can't even mail you one. Sorry!

Yeah, you can bring a parent to handle the paperwork, no notorization required.
Just look for someone who appears to either know what they're doing or needs help doing something. We're not terribly organized early in the morning!

IMO the course should be extremely fast and any tight corner should be making a left hand turn.... i think that is a recipe for a really fair course. :)

Were you at the last event? That was just about as fast as we can get. Mostly 2nd gear, lots of sweepers.
But no... "fast" is not really possible on that site. We're pretty good at being "half-fast", though. :D

Planning on coming this Sunday, just not sure what I'll bring. I do have new 275-NT555R front and 315-NT555R rear shoes on the turbo SUV ;)

Don't know what lunch will be this time around. The oriental catering requires us to place an order well in advance, and we could lose money if attendance is too low. Not a good choice for this event... we just don't know how many people to expect!
We'll probably end up doing pizza again, it's just too easy.
The course design is coming along and may be ready to post for all to see by tomorrow. It looks like it's going to have a pretty fast slalom along the long south side, should be fun.

If you're a first timer, you're a Virgin. If you've got less than 6 events, you're a Novice. Unless your Proxes are RA-1's, they are street tires. We don't care what rims you have or anything else as long as your car is safe.
Don't worry about it much... we don't. ;)

We've had a lot of first-timers lately. I'd say somewhere between about 5 and 10 is typical.

Dan has worked up a little something that has everything in it. You want sweepers, we got sweepers. You want speed, we got some speed. You want a slalom, we got a slalom. You want a hairpin, well... yeah, I don't either, but we got one! And a twisty little carousel at the end, too.

So, how was it? Who took the TTD?
I planned on going, but felt a little weird when I woke up at 2:30:beer:          I'd imagine Oilleak & Muddy may have had the bottle flu today, as well.
It was a pretty good day. Course flowed a lot better than most Sunrider courses (ie: Lot more open) and the weather was great. I think the FTD was the Honda CRX coming in at something like 35seconds with the average runs probably being around 42 seconds or so. Everyone got five runs and then at the end of the day those who wanted to stay and help pick up got to run as many times as they could in a half hour period. I think I ran about four or five times, so ten runs ain't too shabby a day. :D:D After all that I still couldn't seem to break into 37's but
oh well. Still need to work on being more fluid I suppose.

which one? the black neon burning tires all over the course? that one was actually driving on my cheap yokohama street tires. i let him borrow them so he didn't ruin his street tires. he actually rubbed a small hole in his left side wheelwell cover, which exposed his cold air intake.

Yeah, I rode with him a couple runs. Nice kid, but I couldn't break him of his habit of FLOORING it whenever the car started to understeer. It almost seemed like he was used to driving high-power RWD and tail-sliding around turns. (oh wait... you kids call that "drifting" now, don't you? :D )
I told him repeatedly to LET UP when the car starts to understeer and be more gentle with the throttle. Even explained that a FWD car is asking to front tires to do all the work. Didn't seem to help much. Maybe having him ride with some good FWD drivers would help?
Unfortunately, as an instructor, I've learned that it's easier to teach someone to be more agressive than it is to teach them to be less agressive.

Having an instructor in the car is a valuable tool. Just pretend they aren't there and drive. Then they can evaluate and hopefully tell you things that will help you improve. But if you're not pushing it because they're in the car... then they don't get an accurate picture of your driving and their feedback won't help you as much.
Your time was good for a first-timer. The course was simple to follow, but not so easy to drive correctly. It was intentionally set up to be misleading... that's part of the autocross game. I don't think there was a car out there that wasn't capable of turning a time well below 40 seconds, but only 1/3 of the drivers pulled it off. So it's not just you... there were a lot of mistakes to be made on that course, and everyone made some of them.
Stay tuned, I think I'll dig up the course map and do a "correct line" on it. Maybe it will help someone.

Thanks man. 6th place overall, 3rd place in class, I guess I can't really complain. The Datson (Oilleak on the board right?) and Loren tromped my times but I think I'm steadily getting better. I'm thinking along the same lines myself. I know "the driver" could have picked up another second or so outta the SUV.
I'm planning on making the event in May, hope to see you out there Bill. With any luck there won't be a slalom for me to fight thru with my awful steering ratio:D
I really need rear tires...heheheheheheh

I didn't want to take the time to redo Dan's course map, but it's pretty close to reality. Here's the line I drove Sunday. How close were you to it?

everything seems about right cept the downshifting to first. Not fun in a non-miata.

I stayed in first gear like you said loren and I think I hit the rev limiter once. Some of the corners I had wright but others were way off. I guess I just takes time to figure out how to run a line.

You know, I've heard that "I can't downshift to first in this car" thing before. And I would buy it in a car like Brian's old Datsun... but in anything built within the last 20 years or so... I don't buy it. I've driven several cars where the owner said they couldn't pull a good downshift to first and dropped it in smooth as silk. Practice rev-matching! A little throttle blip to match the revs and the car will eagerly slip right into first.
And, Mike, if you wern't hittting the rev limiter much, you didn't really need to shift to 2nd. I bet if you'd been on the right line, you could have carried more speed and maybe been on the rev limiter more. Then you have to decide if it's worth shifting into 2nd. For me, it was.

FWIW, I double clutch my downshifts. Rev matching is a must so you have to learn how to do that. I think it's actually easier to double clutch as once you get used to it, it has a rythm. Either way, you'll have trouble with the shift itself, or the result of the shift if you don't learn that skill.
Some cars have the pedals spaced too far apart for easy heal and toe but that generally allows easier left foot braking which leads to the next skill to learn, Clutchless Downshifting. That allows left foot braking in a braking zone in which you need to downshift. That of course means practicing my left foot braking more which is difficult in my car 'cause the pedals are spaced so close together.

oh I can do it but by the time I get into gear I'm about at rev limiter anyways since my 1st gear is so short.

The only reason to downshift is to keep the engine from falling off the torque curve. If you're on the rev limiter imediately after a downshift then there was no need for the shift - it slowed you down. That said, The hairpin after the slalom was only about a 15mph corner and almost every car's first gear is good for at least 25mph. Mine will do 39 in first. I can't imagine any car that would be on the revlimiter there. The ultimate judge though is the timer.

my first gear is good for 30, so i stayed in first for the entire course. and each time around, i hit my rev limiter three times.

I tried shifting between first and second, but I just couldn't multi-tast that much for some reason...I kept forgetting to shift back into 2nd after downshifting to first...or I'd over-rev on the rev match...my head just wasn't in it sunday. hopefully next month I'll be a little more prepared...looking to get some new springs by then too, so we'll see how things go.

You definitely want to keep the shifting to a minimum and only do it when it is absolutely necessary. And then do it where it is easiest to do. You'll noticed that I short shifted to 2nd to avoid having to shift in the middle of a sweeper and I downshifted in a nice straight section before the hairpin. Smoothness above all else!

Thanx for the advice...for some reason, when I was in CT I could tear thru the backroads that made these courses look like straight aways like they were nothing....but in the srt-4 in such a tight space I just can't put everything I know to work at the same time.

trust me, with a 2.5RS you don't need to downshift to 1st. i've done pretty good at the sunriders events just leaving it in 2nd. if anything, downshifting to 1st will slow you down unless you are good at heel-toeing.

Wouldn't it make more sense to ask your question THERE so that the person who posted the pictures can answer it?

Oh, alright... just to add a little sunshine to your day:
Mike, don't be a dumb ass! If someone posts information on one forum, don't go asking questions about it on another forum... on another website! The SunRiders Autocross yahoo group is not a read-only forum. I know this because I'm the one who set it up.
Go ye therefore and post your query there, where it will surely be answered by those who know.
PS: I've got about a dozen videos of Miatas on that course that someone sent me. Anybody want to host them?
They are about 5-6 mb each.
