View Full Version : Subsonic Filters...over rated?

Some people say subsonic filters are over rated. Some say they are needed for ported enclosures not to mess up. I want to know what you gues think mainly because I want to buy a new amp and I am debating which one to get only because of the subsonic filter. The amps are the JBL 1200.1 which does not have one and the hifonics 1500 which does. So what do you guys think?

The amp you buy doesn't have to have one you can buy an external one. But they are important if you're running a ported box.

I've never used one and have never had a problem, if that says anything. Guess it all depends on just what kind of limits you plan on pushing your system to. If you're that worried about it though, pick one up, I believe you can find them for less than $10.

tbs r u running a ported box? I want to run it sealed right now then move on to ported later, but i hear SF are jus a myth and it doesnt really help nething

If you send a signal below the tuned frequency of the port than you can damage your sub because it behaves as if it's not in an enclosure. That is the reason for a SSF to make sure you don't send your sub anything below what your box is tuned to.

Yes, my box now is ported. I've had it this way for close to 2 years now, no ssf.
Ive never used the subsonic filter on any of my amps and never had any problems with ported boxes. If you build ported boxes properly to the manufacturers specs you should no problems.

The purpose of a subsonic filter is so you do not overextend the speaker and detach the lead going from you voice coil to the cone. You could also damage the surround. You can’t hear below a certain frequency. So it is point less for you to go down that low. The lower the freq the more the cone extend or flexes back and forth. As far as box tuning you can go below the point wear a box is tuned but there is a limit to how far. Example if you box is tuned for 60 hertz. Then your roll off is about 25-30 hertz if your box is tuned for 100hz the roll of is about 50-60hz

the filter is usefull for those unexpected bass notes. but it is not needed. By the way Jl Audio amp are some of the best on the market right now.

If its a choice between the hifonics or the JBL i would go with HIfonics. I bet you hate JL because everybody else has it. The reson they have it is because its the shit.
thats a good reason to hate jl amps.

flame flame flame away. Everyone has it because they THINK its the shit and they THINK its top of the line. Like people at school who just praise JL, they think thats all car audio is is jl. But yet they havent heard of any other company out there like ED or RE. They think JL is god but yet it isnt, there are other things out there that are a lot cheaper and just as good as jl. JL is played out and over priced. So no i dont hate these amps because "they are shit" whoops i mean "they are the shit" its because every lil kid and their mom praises it as the creator of car audio and nothing else can beat it and I am tired of hearing about it. Oh and same goes to that bling bling shine all in my face with flames all over the place audiobahn. "Damn man audiobahn is the hardest hitting sub i ever heard! Plus its got that mad tite chrome flames!" Bla

Personally I don't hate JL stuff I think for the most part they make quality stuff. However, the reason I would never run there stuff is I like to be different.

JL is solid and proven company. I've got nothing against them. If it sounds good, that's all the matters as far as I'm concerned.

no one is running xtant amps. No one has the panasonic hu i have. they all run alphine h/u. Everyone around here is running either audiobahn or JL subs and amps, i even see a lot of peeps wit damn bazooka amps. Thats all i ever see around here. I know about 2 other people running alpine and its type R and my setup sounds jus as clean as theirs, theirs jus gets a bit deeper. I always get compliments from people saying "damn i didnt know e's hit that hard" All I am saying outta all this is im tired of hearing audiobahn and JL is the shit and nothing tops them when shit does. All people know around here is jL or audiobahn. I cant have a decent conversation wit someone without someone butting in saying" i bet jl or audiobahn will beat that sub neday," then i ask them about these other companies and they have no idea what im talking bout. Then what really gets to me is when they say "Oh the audiobahn can handle this many watts more than the ED sub so it must get louder"

There is alot of things you dont know about car audio. Xtant was very good i had a 401x and a 1001x in my car each of them cost 1000.00 The makers of that amp switch over to JL Audio and started making those amps. Thats my Jl is so good. THe Reason i like JL amps is becasue you can put what every ohm load you want to them and its the same power. Thats the best feature. and also there slim not bulky so you can do some wicked installs with them. AB is good but i dont like the crome and flames to ricer for me.

Although you don't personally know anyone with a panasonic HU or Alpine subs, I would consider both probably as mainstream as it gets. I doubt the largest electronics retailers in the country would carry items that no one buys. I personally don't crave being "different" in the brands I choose...sounding good is the bottom-line, I don't care who makes it...differences can come in my install.

RE: why i bought mine, I knew about the xtant thing, and I like the variable ohm load (its only variable down not up lol) and my 500/1 and 300/4 are symmetrical.. which I love the look of a clean install (which is why i did mine like i did) and symmetrical amps make it that much easier

All i gotta say is I dont like JL and audiobahn and the people who whore it. Ok maybe JL and audiobahn make good product, i never said they DIDNT, i just said I dont like them because they are PLAYED OUT. Now get off my dick. Ok first you are correct. They started with presission power making the black series. Then they went on to MTX maker the amp. Those are called the gold series. Then they went to Xtant make there X series. then on to JL Audio making there first amps. Now they are with boston Accoustics. making there new line. Yes i know alot about the history of things i worked at sound advice for over two years they had training for all of these companies every 3 months

well, to the JL comments..... i only love jl because they actually last and are good products, i knocked them when i was younger just because i used to look at their power ratings, i thought more power = a better speaker, well, thats not the case......
i think jl is a great bang for the buck product, who says JL's are expensive? not where i shop, sure W7's and thier bad ass amps are, but any companies top of the line shit is mega expensive, its comp. shit, if your not building an all out db drag car, why do you need w7's? get some w0's or 3's and your shit will sound great and they arent that expensive or hard to power............

just cuz im bored i guess ill give me .02 on this flame war, i kinda agree with both afboy and tbs, sound quality is the most important. yes jl does make awesome shit, and yes they are played out. when i open up my trunk i want people to say wow wtf, then ill blow them out of the water with brands theyve never heard of. it all comes down to the fact that i never liked having the same stuff as everyone else, no matter how good it is.

at the same time as I love having an ED sub, i hate explaining it every fuckin time... id rather everyone go "oh jl" instead of what is that thing.. well its elemental designs and ehh fuck you
