TR guys that trophied or got really close:
FLMCoupe, Jamal, 1st in SM2
PseudoRealityX, Jesse, 1st in ES
MrSideways, Ian, 1st in BS
JReyenga, Jim, 2nd in ES
OversteerS2K, me, 3rd in BS
OilLeak, Brian, 4th in CSP
What an event. The competition was probably a little weaker than most of the Tour events or Pro Solo's, but somewhere around 160 drivers showed up and everyone was good.
Results (Sat. only as of this post): http://www.scca.com/amateur/solo2/n...ers/results.pdf
Jamal ran some of the fastest first heat times and took Street Mod 2 pretty handily over Bob Palmblads 300Hp supercharged Miata (that took the top 2 spots in SM2 last week at the Pro Solo in Atlanta). Great runs man! I have the spectator view of your Sat. spin if you want to copy it for vanity :) (or to amuse your friends).
Jesse beat up on E-Stock, but Jim stayed pretty close especially with the limited amount of time he's spent in that car. I think Jim found more downed, or out of place, cones than anyone else and had some re-runs. Those Hoosiers must have been up to temp for the whole day. They took out a similar 2 driver MR2 from Atlanta.
Brian had some serious national competition in C-Street Prepared with a sick-fast Toyota MR-S driven by a top 3 Nationals finisher in it (& damn fast co-driver). He finished just one spot out of the trophies, but beat some of the best guys in the state in doing it.
My class, B-Stock, had Ian killing everyone and after Saturday's runs 2nd to 5th was only seperated by 0.38x on a 51+ sec. course. Today I managed to jump to 3rd, from 5th, and just missed 2nd by 0.046 (after 96 sec.!). Mark Sipe ran the fastest Sunday time in his Z-4 3.0, but had cone problems on all his Sat. runs. He should have come in 2nd but I'll thank him later for being a cone pounder Sat. The class ended with 2nd to 6th seperated by 0.426 and 4th & 5th finished tied to the thousandth of a second after 2 days! The S-2000's took the top 4 spots and the 350Z got pounded.
Congrats to those that deserve it. I can't wait until next year (unless I get raped, uh I mean bumped, into AS).

Thanks Todd! You did awesome for your first national. How long have you been racing? I think you might have gotten a trophy faster than I did into my "career".
by the way, AS might not be so bad. Ian beat them by over a second overall. And those guys in AS aren't just locals...
Danny and GH Sharp combined have a full winter wardrobe of national championship jackets.

Thanks for the write up Todd! Great job out there! Must be enjoying those Hoosiers!
I want that video! What do we have to do? Do you need me to download it like last time?
Here's a video (http://www.fastjam.com/autox/tour04.wmv) of my last and fastest run on Sunday, I know I could've gone faster, I can see where I lost some time. I drove better on Sunday and was closer to Popp than I was on Saturday, let's just blame it on lack of sleep! :)

Nice video, Jamal! Damn, I wish we had a site that big available here in the Bay area.
What speed does 2nd top out at in your car?

Thanks Loren! 2nd is good for 53 mph, that's why I was short shifting to 3rd, makes the car more balanced... if I stay in 2nd the car is out of control and I bounce of the rev limiter too much!

I think June or July will be 2 years. So, just over a year and a half. But I spent a lot of time in karts when I was a kid and have been slaloming "Q-tips" in Buicks and Caddys since I moved to Florida...
AS might not be so bad. Ian beat them by over a second overall. And those guys in AS aren't just locals
I think the course condition improved as the day went on. AS was running in the 2nd heat. Imagine Jamal & Bob's times if they ran 3rd with us. There was a lot more rubber on the apexes after those CP beasts ran. I don't understand how the SEB can get factual feedback from members about bumping up the standard Boxster and the 2.0L S-2000 to AS when they keep running BS and AS in different heats at all of the Tour and Pro Solo events. If they want opinions, than fine, but they really should have the two classes running under the exact same conditions for all of the big events, including Topeka, if they want a fair comparison. Unfortunately only Ken Marion had one in AS over the course of these two SouthEast events and his car is very underprepped. He has nothing more than a mild alignment and some VictoRacers. Hopefully he'll find some Hoosier sizes that work, put on a front sway bar and an agressive alignment, and we can compare (locally) on some different sites and courses.

Yep. I can bring it to you and if there's any way you could temporarily host my last run from each day I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to be able to have my dad & brothers in Indiana be able to get on TR and see it. Just PM or E-mail me. I'll be off Tuesday and could come by the credit union when you break for lunch or something.

I have to agree with jesse(for once), The 2.0 S2K isn't going to do badly in AS. The two classes practically run the same times now. I just know it won't be as dominat. But it's going to be very course dependant. Some courses the S2K can barely keep up with whats in it's class now. It just all depends and Ft. Myres is almost always an S2000 course. With that said According to Jesse the S2K wouldn't be to bad in SS either. Jerry Onks is no slouch (6th at nationals) but you have to remember most of these guys from Snow country have more seat time on snow mobiles then cars recently.

transition happy courses are going to favor a car like a S2000 over a Z06 every time, just based on width.
In a sweeper, that's where a Z06 wearing 315 hoosiers and only 300 lbs heavier than a S2000 is going to overcome it....

Speaking of which, I heard over the PA when I was at the Start line that you edged me out of 4th by something like .007 sec, so I poured it on for that final run. I took that wall of cones between the two slaloms at 3rd, instead of second, which made me too hot going into that second, and final, slalom. Hated that I lost the car just TWO cones before the finish!!!!

So I've been watching these over and over again... here's what I've come up with.
Day 1:
-start looks good, maybe SLIGHTLY behind on first right hander before the slalom.
-go into slalom nicely, DO YOU GOTO 3rd?!? looks and sounds like it. Slalom looks good, again maybe a tad behind.
-going into the offsets, you set up late, the second(right side) one is done well, but you fall behind on the last one too.
-get going way to the right before the hard left. Good line, surprised you could get over so far.
-a little late onto the throttle around the left. At least with me, I could get on really early and it held.
-turn around looks good, slalom afterwards is good as well.
-entry into the double set of double pointers is a bit late. you're tight on them, which is good, but you might have wanted to get a bit wider at entry and dive through them to help your entry into the next tight slalom.
-rest of the run looks good other than getting behind on the 3rd cone in the last slalom. finish might have had a bit too much steering effort....i mean it looks like you could have just gone straight. I don't know.
Day 2:
-start looks good
-looks like you might have been able to get back on the power quicker and/or used less lift to make it rotate around the first right hander before the slalom
-slalom looks good
-id think you went into the far left offset a bit too straight on, but you turned in nice and early, looks decent.
-the sweeper to the left looks good, seems constant throttle, but not sure how the S2000 was acting.
-the last 2 offset gates, you fall behind, big time. costs you some time there.
-brake a bit late for the turnaround, but otherwise looks ok
-big save after the turnaround actually helps you to point the car where you want to go.:)
-start off way late again into the slalom, but actually fix your timing by the end of it...but it costs you some speed
-went in too straight into the wall thing. I think swinging out a bit wider allowed you to get through it with a bit more speed.
-you actually stayed ahead better than I did after the wall, but i think some of that might have been the speed I was able to keep through it.
-finish is good
Todd, I think you did really well on the whole. Especially for a basically brand new setup on a course you're not familiar with, in a petty stressful event overall. Give yourself more credit. I didn't do as well as you did in my first Tour. I took 11th of 15.:)

Day 1:
-start looks ok, could have launched a bit harder, but with all the power, it wouldn't have done you much good
-slalom entry looks good, slalom good
-downshift sounded good, but maybe a little late, because you went into the offsets pretty late
-stayed late through the offsets, but like Todd, did good getting back to the right for the sweeper thing.
-got back on the power nice and early through the left sweeper into the little slalom.
-turnaround looks good, places you nice and early for the left right combo
-i would have gone out further before taking the big right hander onto the backside of the course
-BUT...you used throttle to get yourself in nicely for the slalom
-shift to 3rd was good, a little tight on entry to the twin double pointers. I went in wider, and exited a bit tighter.
-tight slalom looks good
- offset to the right, you're a bit late again
-finish slalom looks good
Day 2:
-start through the first slalom looks really nice. i like the line going wide after the slalom.
- everything upto the big slide look really good I think. The slide could have pointed you in the right direction, but I think only Ian is that good at sliding around.
-line through the back of the front straight looks good. Todd might want to look at that to see where he could have been a little earlier, and how much less steering he would have had to do.
-looks like you braked late too, but you got the car pointed in the right direction quickly, so it might be the camera angle.
-backside looks AWESOME. I think that's why you took FTD for Heat 1 on Sunday.
Great runs Jamal, and congratulations on the win over Palmblad.

Thanks Jesse! It helps to have someone else tell you where you're messing up and where you're doing good. I don't have driving down to a science yet like a lot of the top drivers, including you. If you ask me how my run was I would say I have no clue! I drive by feel most of the time!
I think I had ftd in the morning for both days, but I did drive better on Sunday. For some reason after a track event my driving is always a little off, it takes a few autox event to get back into my autox mode! Plus the fact that I didn't get much sleep on Friday didn't help. Blame it on Ian! :)
Launching in 1st with the rear end ratio and the blower on my car is very hard! That's why I have to baby it until I shift to 2nd. The slide cost me .5 sec, wouldn't you think?
PseudoRealityX
02-26-2004, 02:21 PM
I couldn't guess how much time the slide cost you....i wouldn't think a half second.
Also, i can't tell you how my run was until I can go back and look at it. I kinda know what I'm trying to do, and drive by feel too. I still don't have enough seat time to be THAT scientific about it.

Thanks for the review. I have a ways to go. I walked the courses right and then disregarded the lines I had set.
Something's clunking around in the front end. I think I broke either an end-link, the adjustment pin, or the bar itself. I noticed a loud noise braking into the turn around on my fisrt Sun. run. I felt a lot better Sun. and am now wondering if that's when it happened. I figured it was just a chunk of rubber coming off since I had a lot of rubber migration Sat. Sunday I didn't fight push at all and Sat. it felt like a front heavy FWD (everything was reallly late). Sun. I had a little oversteer again (the snap after the turn around) Now I'm getting the back end swinging out on street tires. I'll have no chance to get under it until Sunday.
Nice runs Jamal. I need to marry the girl with the blue twin to your car (sans supercharger). Knock out two dreams in one fell swoop...

Don't worry, I did the same thing. On both of you guys' runs, I complimented on the right offset into the left sweeper right before the turnaround on Saturday's course. You both did that faster than I did....or at least took the line I wanted to.
I got behind after the wall on Sunday too. And braked too late into the turnaround. I could have had a 43.high easy I think.

QUOTE]-go into slalom nicely, DO YOU GOTO 3rd?!? looks and sounds like it.[/QUOTE]
Sat. I did go to 3rd through the middle of the big slalom. Sounds like (can't see the tech.) it was a little early, maybe around 7,500. I'd like to see Ian's Sat. vid to see if he carried 2nd all the way through. Sometimes it's just a lot more stable and I was trying to exit way left, making that hard left cut. I read the review and watched the runs a few more times. Not that I could catch Ian, but there was another 1.1 to 1.5 there for me Sat. and possibly 0.8 to 1.2 there Sunday.
I think it's time for an Evo course. My bad habits only go away when I run sevaral events in a short time span. And who knows how far away I was from the cones. I didn't clip one all weekend and that's typically a sign that they were too far away.
Thaks.

I'm pretty sure Ian went to 3rd....but I can't believe he went in that early, unless he was WOT through the right hander...which I still doubt.
If that's the case, he's doing like 64mph where I'm doing 52...because I shifted to 3rd at about the same spot.

Oh well. I need that "option package", not neccesarily her. You just don't see:"Cute, intelligent, and car savy young woman seeking random guy to co-drive my ASP Bimmer in Solo2 & track events and share my bed", too often in the singles ads. Maybe it's time for my girlfriend to learn to drive a manual...She does want a pink DelSol (complete with pink low-rider lights underneath), so maybe I could be the laughing stock of DSP next year in the Barbie Si and trade the S for an SSR and a trailer. I'd have to go all out with the wheels & calipers powder coated pink, too.

That del Sol that James brings out every so often is a blast to drive, and it also looks like poo usually. It's not that hard to make a really really fun Del Sol. All he's got is a set of circle racing 13 x 8s, ground controls, a set of koni yellows, and a lighted flywheel and unbolted exhaust and some sort of 30 dollar ebay intake.
