so i decided to try it today since it was raing out and it worked pretty good. my question is does it hurt the drivetrain or motor?
it's got to put strain on the clutch but so does clutch kicking. has anyone broke anything doing it?
its bad on clutch, worse then clutch kicking
weight transfer its a lot more efficient anyways, especially in the rain.

how is it worse that clutch kicking? Shift lock feels nice a smooth in my car while clutch kicking is a big jerk through the drive train.
I do it in situations in alternitive to pulling the ebrake mostly, (90 turns or turning around) but it's a cool way of initiating a drift in my opinion. I don't like pulling the e-brake or clutch kicking...
I usually drift in second gear, so I basicly just push in the clutch at wait for the rpm's to drop and then drop the clutch. feels nice a smooth... I perfer not using little tricks, but sometimes you need a little extra help...

that's the exact way i describe a shift lock also. sometimes i'll come in hot in third gear, slowing down, clutch in, foot off the gas, into 2nd gear but clutch is still in (notice no right foot on gas pedal yet) start to shift weight, and right when i'm shifting weight i smoothly let the clutch out, depending on how much step-out i want. With the 2way Nismo LSD it works incredible! Even with an open diff it works great also.

yea i still have an open diff and it worked great for me. alot easier than using the hand break because i still have both hands on the wheel and don't have to fight with the stupid little button that realeases it

i perfer weight transfer works perfectly fine for me dry or wet:D

I too prefer the shift lock as described above, but when initiating the turn I like to have my right foot on the brake when I let the clutch out to keep the weight on the front tires because if I don't i do a nice four wheel drift off the pavement and into the grass. understeer owns me. I was also curious as to what kind of damage it does to the drivetrain.

all i do is put her in 2nd release clutch slow gas throw her sideways and have control most of the time:lol: oh yea i spin out overcorrecting alot>hahaha

What? you don't need LSD! I don't have LSD I and Drift just fine! come, you won't regret it. and those worrying about tech - Go see mattback at SS, DON'T assume your car won't pass, your car probably will pass just fine!
I've been to a drift day before (in california)... trust me, you don't want to miss this...

The damage is moor to the drive train specially the diff. The ring and pinion go from pressing up against the teeth one way to the other with lots of force I have seen people snap a tooth or two off this way, but really it isn't good for any thing to do with the car. Also it seams to me that you all that are talking about a smooth down shift aren't actually experiencing shift lock, but moor of a throttle off over steer. Shift lock is very rough and has to be done at high rpm to work. The way it works is by the engine actually locking up the rear wheels. not really locking them up but slowing them down enough that they actully skid against the road. That is why they say to only do it in the rain. It is easier to loose traction and in turn is easier on the drive train.

I know it does it every time you let off but, you don't usually do it hard enough to acutely skid the tires along the ground. My miata has pretty narrow tires and is pretty light so it will skid the tires pretty easily but I have a pinion gear that is missing a 1/4 of the teeth that says the differential doesn't like shift lock. I don't say you have to believe me though. It is just what I have experienced.
