Yes, we will have a Drivers meeting in the morning, and also offer to give tips to people while they are doing runs. We may also be able to offer more experienced drivers riding passenger to help explain what the driver is not doing correctly, and naturally we love passengers riding when we're sliding around :-)

The question is, are ya gonna come out!!

Awesome deal. Although I am not a big fan of the whole drift thing, I'm definately coming to watch. As long as the word "stuffs" is used at an absolute minimum (perhaps there should be a rule banning its use ;) ), it should be a fun time.

The helmets will be Snell SN 95, but if you have a beloved helmet that fits you really well, and looks to protect you from hitting your head against the side of the car , as youre not going to be hitting anything but maybe a cone or two at the event, we might look the other way... hint hint SN 90

helmit $80 - Why not see if you can share a helmit with someone?

Vlsd $300 - Go without one, you don't need a lsd to drift.

I drive a 86 corolla gts with like 100hp and a open diff - proveing you don't need an lsd or a lot of power to drift. (we got good footage a few nights ago)

Azenis' up front and cheap used tires in the back is perfect for those who need a little extra help (open diff and/or lacking power).

How many are seriously coming out and participating? Matt has been putting a lot of time and effort into this. I should know, I'm his girlfriend and he's been working on this during our free time! ;) I really hope none of you are flaking out and going to let this fall to ruin. I'm going to pre-pay my $50 today. I suggest all who are serious about this or claim that they are going to compete should do the same SOON!

I just want to make sure you are all being serious and not just saying this. Matt and others are literally working their hardest to organize this and bring a LEGAL drift day to Tampa. Coming out and spectating is fine, but we need people to drift and learn how to drift. :)

That's the thing though. No one has to have anything mastered. It's really mostly a learning experience and a place for us kids to legally drift and LEARN how to master it instead of learning and getting tickets or arrested. Seriously. You guys should just pre-pay and DEFINITELY come out!!!! Not any of this "should be out" shit. ;)

Yeah, you are stupid if you don't take this oportunity to drift LEGALLY! $50? come on, thats less than I spend on tires a week! (2 sets of rears so far this week...)

Don't think you need to be an expert, come wanting to learn and intent to destroy tires!

I can't stress the low grip tires in the rear enough. When I went to a battleversion drift day in California (back when I was a beginner) I grabed some of the worst (grip wise) tires I could find and had a blast! There were people there who used some sporty tires and where having dificulty kicking it out at all - you don't want this to be you.

Yeah, video action! camera guys wanted.

Putting in a new clutch next week, should be broken in, ready for the event. Are MR cars allowed? It's rear drive :D I want to try and see if I can slide the SW20. In the mean time, I will be looking for a shitty set of tires for the rear. I would like to commit, but it all depends on the car being prepared. I will definetly spectate, but I am more eager to run.

BTW- Way to go Rob and SS. Thanks for putting in all the hard work to bring this event to tampa. We owe you guys!!

the example has the models and sizes of tires exactly the same for the entire car..

so far unless i'm mising something then I couldnt see how any of these could be legal..

Azenis + HTR or VISA or Crap Shit MK1

Hoosier + HTR or whatever..

and REALLY technically

HTR200 + Visa would not be legal either..

Personally, I don't think there should be a charge for specataors. Who'se gonna want to pay $5 to watch a bunch of people doing donuts in a parking lot? I think this should be run like an autocross. People don't have to pay to watch an autocross. Also, With this being the first event, I wouldn't expect it to be an immediate success. But the more people who come out to watch, the more people there will be to participate at the next one. Just my $.02. Good luck with the event.

Tacdout is right. If your goal is to promote drifting in this area, the event should allow for free spectating, at least for now. The only way to have successful promotion of drifting as a bonefide motorsport is to have as much support as possible. That means as many interested people as possible.

Drag strips charge admission because they can. It's already an established motorsport in this area. Not to mention they are a business that generates income and provides seating, time/mph boards viewable for spectators, bathrooms, and a concession area....this takes money to run. What are the organizers planning to do with all the spectator procedes from this drift event? Are they collecting admission from the spectators to offset the cost of the days rent of the facility for the drivers?
At any rate....good luck with the event. I hope it is a success.

i'm sorry but drifting is still a major show for the spectators.

that due to the fact that its 15 dollars admission elesehwere in the nation, 5 dollars is pretty f'ng cheap if you ask me. thats cheaper than a 12 inch sub from subway (including tax).

What am I going to get for my $5 bucks? Are there going to be some pro-drifters or some exotic machinery at this event? Am I going to have some stands to sit in to get a good view of the course?
I wouldn't be too suprised to see people lining up along the fence and peering in for free.

Hey, hope I'm wrong....just some things that one might want to consider. I too would have gone...but I think I'll go spend my five bucks on a meatball sandwhich value meal at Subway instead. ;)

you go ahead and buy your meatball sandwich...no one personally invited you to come or desperately seeks your presence... if 5 bucks is too much to buy the winning lottery ticket so be it for you...i dont care for pro drifters being there or "exotic machinery"... i am there to drive and have spectators to come and have a good time and maybe start to get involved the drifting...

I think you'd be paying a lot more than five dollars to see professional drifters.... if you have a problem with paying and supporting and five dollars is too much then do not go and spectate. If you're not a cheap person and don't complain about five dollars, then pay and have a good time. :)

And the fact that this IS INDEED the first Drift day in Tampa means that they need all the monetary support they can get. It was hard enough getting people to allow this! They need support, not people coming on the board complaining about the five dollar spectating price being too much.

will there be grandstands, or bring-your-own-seat?

Matt Vassallo
02-02-2004, 07:53 PM
no grandstands just yet. we'll have to work with spc on this one, once we see what we can do. maybe eventually we'll get some buildable ones or what not but right now we will just kind of have a free roaming spectator thing with cones guarding where you cannot go kinda thing. hahaha.

no caged up spectators here, we have
100% organic free roaming spectators, think of it as a pit pass. come in, talk to the drivers, see the tires getting torn up, learn a bunch, ride along, whatever ;-)

all for 5$

Jonas

Matt Vassallo

folding tables maybe, we'll see what we can do. we will probably be purchasing alot of it for future use at other areas, this is why some of the costs are there.

What are you doing about course workers?

Perhaps making those who want to watch but don't want to pay work the course and chase cones would be an equitable solution?
The drivers shelling out the 50 bucks will be able to get more runs in when 1/2 of them don't have to be out chasing cones (depending on turnout of course).

the corolla leaks oil and has bungee cords to hold the battery down
nor does it have an ebrake cable, though i dont know the course layout, so i dont even know if it will be needed.

:-/

i guess next time.......

As per usual, my intentions were good. I don't know why I even try to get involved. Good luck anyway.

hp you dialed in for me!

The Z is still killing everything in sight at Sebring. Thanks again!

i was looking through the dg trials website and found a page listing all the rules for an event held up north and they were saying no passengers. so im guessing the rules for this event were revised a little and they just have to sign their name on the driver registration form as a passenger. Is that correct

I most likely will be there and if I go, there will definatley be a brand new digital vid cam in my hands. First time taping anything really except for screwing off so I hope I do a decent job so I can edit and post it...

People don't have to pay to watch an autocross. Also, With this being the first event, I wouldn't expect it to be an immediate success. But the more people who come out to watch, the more people there will be to participate at the next one. Just my $.02. Good luck with the event. I would pay and I own a god damn domestic muscle car mustang 5 liter that has the shittiest god damn god given over steer with no power steering at the moment. It is not donuts in a parking lot WHAT SO EVER...... It will be cool and if you lose the shitty attitude you should come cause you will have fun and that is a guarentee...

Its too bad I dont have my license to get the car there and then have some shitty rear tires with a nice lsd(not a burnt clutch pack lol) and then power steering would help also. If I had all that I would be like the only domestic driver there lool. I am gonna go to the next if they do another. It sounds to be fun as hell;)

This is great. We're actually going to have a decent turnout!!!! What about James? I don't think you're going to be able to get good video footage inside a car with suspension unless the camera is on an inside bolted car mount.

I'll be there. For shitty circumstances, Matt is going to drift my car (not too much though since I need it as a daily driver). I would participate, but I'm riding along since he cannot drive his I'm allowing him to drive mine. So I won't be driving, but I'll be riding along and taking photos. :-D
