Last one of the 2003 season.
Entry fee is $30 for non-members or $25 for members.
Registration is open from 8:30-9:30.
Location is our usual SPCC site.
If you've not been there, it's at:
3100 34th St S
St Petersburg, FL
33711 US
If you look at a map, these instructions will make sense:
You actually have to turn off of US19 (34th St) at 32nd or 36th Ave (there's a light at 32nd) and go East to 32nd St. The training pad is at the South end of 32nd St. You'll see us there.
I'll be there.
Here's to hoping we get something other than pizza though...

As a matter of fact, we've arranged for Vietnamese food. Same stuff we had at the school last month. Good stuff!

Our club treasurer has connections with a local Vietnamese restaurant owner who does catering. :)

Only if you pick a competent person and train them how to do it, too. :)
(See how that works? Delegate, delegate, delegate... then I don't have to do shit!)
Hey, I'm all for it, Matt. You've got the basic system down. You should try to get with Brian and learn how to set it up, too. It's always good to have more people who know how to do that sort of thing.

Yeah Matt,
If you want to do timing that's cool by me. Maybe Dan ought to help out with that as co-chair. I'll leave it up to him though. If you want to learn how to set up the stuff, we'll probabley do that around 8am. It's easy to set up.
Loren, do you have the timer batteries, if so, remeber to give them a charge friday night - then remember to bring them Saturday morning. That's always my fear - "Yeah, they're fully charged... And sitting on my desk in Riverview"

Yep, I have them. I hopefully won't forget them. I've been good about taking a moment to sit and make sure I have everything before I leave for an event. I need to give them a quick touch-up charge Friday night, too.

I don't think we've done less than 7 at a regular event this year. Unless we get flooded with people, I would expect probably 8 at this event. Brian has a two-section course that will allow multiple cars on course and a start interval of pretty much as quick as we'd care to send them (20-25 seconds easily). That's all it takes to get lots of runs.
Brian or loren send me the track layout please! I wanna see what corners I can ummm, let lose on hahahah

I can think of at least 4 turns that would be "driftable" on the most recent version of the course that I have seen. Two of them are tightish, one is the usual "big sweeper" on the East end, and one is somewhere between. I'll let Brian post his course if he wants to.

Ahh, what the hell - we're not giving out any trophies anyway.
neurovish
11-12-2003, 08:02 PM
aww crap...I hope that corner near the end doesn't turn out to be 1st gear material
The actuall Finish is before that, since it cannot go out of that black box around it (safety area) thats more of a slow down area.
oilleak
11-12-2003, 08:15 PM
The left hander after the sweeper will be a 1st gear turn. You could do it in second but you'll be way down in the revs. Good excuse to learn how to brake and rev-match a down shift while turning. I would have liked to open that up more but there's no way with how little space we have to work with at SPJC. I wanted to have a couple of lefts (oops - I mean rights, dyslexya you know) on the course as well as all those rights (No, lefts - damned directionally challenged fool!). It should be relatively fast as far as SR courses go.

There's nothing inherently wrong with having to downshift to first gear. Not getting to shift OUT of first gear kinda sucks sometimes.
I think the turn he was talking about was the last right before the squiggle at the finish. It probalby will be first gear... but what's wrong with that? Gives you a good strong acceleration through the finish.
Most of the rest of the course should be 2nd gear, though. Pretty unusual for that site.

They are all learning ones, my man. Even those of us who think we know what we're doing are still learning.
You could wait for a "school" type event to come up, but don't! Just come to a regular autocross when you can, there are always people around who are willing to help you learn.

What he said. Just stay in 2nd if you can. But if you can't...
Try double-clutching, it might help synch the input shaft speed and allow you to drop into first easier. Maybe a throttle blip, too.
This will take some practice. Not the sort of thing you're going to learn AT an autocross.
I had been planning on attending for a while. But last night I came down with the flu. Sounds like a lot of people are going also. This sucks. Oh well, if anyone is going to Zephyrhills next weekend, see you there.
Hahah, Damn SR20 wont let me downshift to 1st, but im going to make the rev's go high so I will be well into the powerband can you guess how? hahahaha....oh man oh and kevin be there at 8 be at my house at 7:30 mmmk?

I absolutely suck at 1st gear downshifts, why do you think I always yank the ebrake around tight corners? :)
The whole braking while turning and downshifting thing I'm fine at...as long as it's anything other than first. I hate my first gear, it likes to be shifted out of...not into.
I had to deal with it at the state championships, and I'm sure everybody on the south side of the track could hear the grind.

There were NO 1st gear turns at States, I assure you. Even the S2000 which has a 47mph first gear and is totally gutless under 6000 rpm didn't use it.
If you had to goto first, you need to work on speed maintence:nerd: :P

Listen to Jesse. He maintains so much speed he's been accused of having an invisible turbo under the hood of the MR2.

(keeping the joke regarding how long I last vs no problem getting up to myself)
We've been wrapping up pretty early this season. Usually around 2:30-3pm.
If you really need to get out early, be there early to help set up and our event chairman may be gracious enough to allow you to run in the early group and blow off your afternoon work assignment... or at least bail out early if you need to.

Double clutch, blips, huh? You just jam it in 1st, hopefully not bouncing off of the redline, get the rear wheels hopping and adjust for the inevitable oversteer (all the while hearing the rear differential case getting ready to burst)...works for me.
No really, I need to learn that too. I really suck at high RPM throttle modulation (twitcy freakin' S2K). I believe I'll play hookey and see how bad I still am in 1st gear.
ill be there w/ a friend of mine (bmw 540 and m3)

Yes, this could be why I lose GS by about 9 seconds...
I probably didn't have to go into 1st, but it sure as hell looked like a 1st gear corner and my brain immediately said 'oh no! into 1st!' without listening for counter-arguments or considering other options.
