one of my friends told me that they saw a news story on cops saying that they are going to "do anything to stop street racing saturday night", is that what you're talking about?

The only thing that is going to stop them is NEW DAYS AND NEW TIME!

When I lived in Columbus, Ohio, the cops cracked down on the streetracers so bad, (starting in '95 to now), they would deploy two of the city helicopters on us and run sting operations with unmarked cars driven by undercover officers. Once you're in the spotlight of the police chopper...it's over.

The weekend get togethers with racing pretty much ended. (At least the fast cars no longer ran). The younger crowd, (i.e. high schoolers), may have ran, but they were ignorant to what had happened since they weren't around when we would race all night long without a problem.

The die-hard streetracers would meet in the usual spots, but on Sunday-Thursday, 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM.
It would be a quick meeting, long enough to line up and run, then hurry off to another location to pay up.

Looks like Tampa is headed in the same direction.

Honestly, Tampa has already been there. the story you write can be copied word for word for this area. 5-6 years ago, helicopters were out almost every weekend, we used to go to 4 or 5 spots in one night and get chased out of every one of them(Gandy, tyson, seebreeze, 4th street, etc.)before giving up and going home. Every now and then, they'll lighten up for a while, but as soon as street racing hits the news, it's time to crack down. That's when I got out, and that's also about the time the imports started gaining popularity. That's your young crowd that doesn't know. I think it's probably the same everywhere though. If you do it, you're going to get caught eventually, I'll stay at the track now, I like having a clean license.:)
