...Dads car is 97 C5 with 40,000 on the odm. I took it out for a spin last night and this car just shits and gets. (people tell me its a 13 sec car from the factory, I will throw the BS flag all day long on this one), but I could tell when I was slowing to a stop (and only to a stop) that it had a sort of choppiness to the idle. THe only thing I can think of is that the spark plugs needed to bechanged. He said they are the orginal plugs and wires. :o What do you think I should do with it? If it wasn't for me, the car wouldn't get driven....so he dosen't really concern himself with the car. But I know nothing about this car and won't ever for a second say I do. All I can think of is taking to the only vette guy I know of and that is "Formatos Fasterproms, Inc." Jeremey Formato to check the car out. Well, please let me know your opinions on what to do.

Thanks in advance.

Jayson

Yeah that could be your problem along with other things. A friend got 12.8@110 out of a stock C5 so start doing a tune up.

They use platinum plugs in them so 40k isnt much on them but that 6 years old, I would change them.

Most stock vettes ive seen run 106-108 stock 13.3-13.6.
Platinums are suppose to last a long time. I'd change em.. not to hard of the LS1. 6 years on wires could do it though..
hook up a fuel pressure gauge and check what your fuel is doing when its cutting in and out.. could just need a new fuel filter.
Probably something really simply like that..

Thanks for the info on the plugs/wires/fuel fliter. I will take it to that guy and tell him to replace all 3. Well, after he gives me his "professional" opinion.

But at far as 1/4 times go. This fucking thing pulls like a raped ape. My stang off the bottle could run mid 13's and this thing would rape it, especially from a roll. I don't know. I guess when he goes to Cali in January, the car is going to BMP.

c5's are about low 13s, havent heard of any 12s out of a completely stock one and its been out for a while. its strong and straight torque curve is why it feels so much stronger than your stang.

Well, only one way to proves its guts. BMP and the 1320!

From a roll the vettes pull hard to... they are so aerodynamic... so the faster u get your gains are greater... Drag double in smaller intervals as mph increases... so with a drag coeffiecent of .29-.30 and a small surface area... drag will affect it but not as much as other cars.

Is that a 6spd or an auto? I've heard of and read about stock c5's running 12.9s bone stock if it's a 6spd

If you can get that c5 a4 into the 12s stock, you the man! Better bring A LOT of ice for that intake, pump up front air tire pressure. Drop rear tire pressure, and loosen or take off the front sway bar for the trip. :D

Negative ghost rider, the tire pressure will be full

as well as the sway bars staying in place.

It ought to be interesting to say the least.:o

bone stock off the showroom floor I'm going to have to say that the car isn't capable of running 12s. We shall see though!!

The stock Platinum plugs suck major ass. Most of the time the platinum "pucks" fall off the tip and the gap become in the .070 range. Way too big. Put some NGK TR55 plugs in there gapped at stock. They are much better than the AC delco platinums and they are only $2.00 each instead of the $9.00 each for the platinums. The MSD superconductor wires are very cheap but also about as good as it gets. New filter wouldnt hurt either.

I got the plugs from Discount for 1.61/pc

Picked up the MSD's from A&E for 51.xx

The fuel filter has to come from chevy and I guess its not too much for the 97 and then I am being charged $100 for the tuneup/install.

discuss....

Jayson,

Are you high? $100 for the plug and wire change do that shit yourself man. It can be done in an hour or so in your drive way with common hand tools. BTW does the car have an aftermarket filter or air box? I don't think you mentioned that if it does.

Dude, I am not about to wrench on that car. I have heard to many war stories. My dad is footing the bill for it all.

I got the plugs from the bloomingdale discount and the wires from the 56th st AE.

Sounds good. $100 would be ok if he is doing the filter too. That would be about the going rate.

I usually charge $50-70 for plugs and wires depending on year and mods in the way. So if pops is paying that aint too bad.

Ya...it may be a bit over priced. But as long as dad is happy and I get to keep driving it. Its ok with me. I will be sure to let you guys know the out come. My dad just told me now to look into some tuning that can possibly be done with the computers.

Jayson,

Tell your dad to drop some coin on a K&N FIPK or Donaldson Blackwing air intake and some free flowing exhuast first. Then with the tune adjusted I would not be suprized to see 340/350 at the tires on the dyno and 12.8 @ 108 or so at the track.

Well 97-98 LS1s are the same motor with no changes as far as I know. My car with Lid freemods and stock exhuast made 298 at the rear tires and ran a 13.3. Joe99SS ran a 13.00 with his dads 98 C5 vert with a CAI, and Catback so I think it could be done easy using that recipe.

ok guys....took her in for some new plugs and what not. Well, little did I know....the diagnositc showed that my problem was...one of the computers was thinking (while slowing down) that the tires were breaking loose, so the traction control was kicking on/off to keep the tires from spinning. Well, he cleaned up the connections and all was fixed. Well, it started back up. So we are going to take it to another comp so he can clear out the "active handling" that this car dosn't have and we aren't sure as to how it got on the computer. Oh well, she is still running great.
