View Full Version : SunRiders Performance Driving School

Just thought I'd let y'all be among the first to hear that we've just opened up the school to non-SunRiders members. Entry fee is still $40. This is a great opportunity for any of you who are beginning autocrossers, or new to the world of performance driving... or even your girlfriends, spouses, or driving-age children who have NO experience to learn a little bit. Instruction will be tailored to the student, we'll teach you on your level.

Here's the official notice:

-----
It's that time again! This year, instead of doing the law enforcement
training course with cop cars and police instructors, we're going to try
something different. We're going to do something that's got a little more
of a "sports car" slant to it. We'll be using instructors from the local
autocross and racing community to help you learn to drive YOUR car in the
manner it was designed to be driven. Instruction will be tailored to your
own skill level, so it's perfect for anyone from the beginning driver to the
semi-experienced autocrosser. You'll get lots of time driving your car with
instruction (we call that "seat time") to help you improve your driving
skills.

Who: Any club member who wants to learn to better control their car.
What: SunRiders Performance Driving School
When: October 18, 2003 10am-5pm
Where: SPCC Allstate Campus, St. Petersburg

Entry fee will be $40 per driver, limited to first 24 drivers. Sharing
vehicles is NOT recommended. Pre-registration required no later than
October 15. (email or call Jonathan or Loren to get on the list) Payment
accepted on-site.

Our driving instructor recruiter has fallen short of his goal, and we could use a few more instructors for this school event.

If you've been autocrossing (or road racing) for a few years and feel proficient enough to teach basic driving skills to others, I'd like to hear from you. (you don't have to be as good as Jesse or any of the other hot-shoes, you just need to be able to talk another driver through the basics and help them to improve)

Instructors will get the satisfaction of watching their pupils improve, possibly some seat time for themselves, and free lunch. We're looking to get started at 10am and wrap up by 5pm.

Let me know if you can help.

I can't imagine us having "too much" help. Just let me know if you're willing to commit to being there. Thanks.

I'll help. It sounds like fun and I can pass on some of what I learned from the evolution skool. ;)

Hmm... it would be nice to be able to do this. My car's not in shape to handle it, though, not at the moment. How late will registration run?

Registration closes on Oct 15th unless we reach the 24 limit sooner.

What's wrong with your car? As long as it is running and not going to break, it should be fine.

Running... no. It will be as soon as I can find a parts store that has the proper @$#@$ part. At that point, it's a matter of getting a leakdown test and an expert opinion on an odd noise. So, my engine really isn't in a condition where I want to push it. That's why I asked, just in case I get it fixed in the next two weeks.

Can you beg, borrow or steal another car? Doesn't have to be high-performance machine, or anything. Just something solid and realiable. The SPCC surfaces isn't even rough on tires.

PS: Ever heard of NMC racing? (Not My Car... usually refers to rentals) :D

I am disqualified since last time I ran one of your events, I took out the timing box? :D

No, but we have a strict 3-strikes policy. ;)

Want me to put you on the list for the 18th?

Neither of my parents' cars would work. One of them is barely capable of turning without tipping. I would like to do this so I'll ask if they'll sign for a rental car, and if not I could always ask my uncle to borrow his 911. not :(

I'll post back if they say yes or if I can get my car running. :)

Good luck, man. Hopefully you'll get your car running or come up with a workable alternative.

It may help to stress to your parents (or your uncle :D ) that this is a driver training event that will help you learn valuable skills that would take years to learn in regular street driving.

As one who was involved in seven auto accidents (most of which were my fault) between ages 16 and 19, I really wish that such opportunities were presented to me when I was younger.

Hey Loren, I would be happy to instruct people in their own vehicles but I really don't have an operational car of my own worth thrashing right now.

Not having your own car would be no problem at all. Are you available for it? We'd love to have you.

I think that will give us enough instructors. Just need to round up more students now. Never guessed it would be so hard to come up with students!

Great, now if you'll assist my feeble memory by giving me your real name, I'll add you to the list!

Pardon me while I bump this thread.

We still have openings for students at the school. Several TR members are going to be there both as instructors and students.

Just send me your name and I'll get you on the list. Let me know if you have any questions.

I will do my best to get the word out to a few non-internet-addicted auto-enthusiast folk that I know Loren.

Can people just show up on the day of the event or do they need to RSVP?

I'll put you on the list, Ralph. The school will be held at St. Pete College's Allstate Center at 3200 34th Street South in St. Petersburg. Let me know if you have any questions or need more info. Try to be there by about 9am.

I would prefer an RSVP to reserve their spot. If they want to just show up, they can as long as they're there well before 10am. But, if we've filled all the slots before they get there, it's not likely that we're going to fudge our limit of 24 entries... at least not by much.

Entries have been picking up lately. I figured they would, people always wait until the last minute. We're up to 14 entries now. Only one of those is questionable due to the driver's health issues. I think everyone else is pretty solidly planning to be there.

Cool. We're still about 8 short of our limit, so just let me know. If we're still under the limit Saturday, we'll take walk-ins if they show up early enough.

Well, I'll be darned. It doesn't even matter that my car is still broken, I'd had a trip to the mountains with my family planned all along. Next time, eh? I'll get around to fixing my car one of these days, and 3 days in a car with my folks will pretty much kill my desire to go on any extended road trips with them for a while.

I feel your pain. Have a safe, if not pleasant, trip.

Hey, gang.

Time has grown short and I don't have time to sift through my stuff to figure out who said they were coming. I know there were several students enrolled from TR.com. I think I had personal email addresses for most and sent you an email yesterday.

I know there were at least two instructors from here, as well. Brian (Muddy) had to cancel for personal reasons. I hope the rest of you can make it. Be there by 9ish. 7:30 if you can help set up.

We've got fresh Vietnamese food coming in for lunch!

Let me know if you guys have any questions. My TR notifications haven't been working this week, so send me an actual email if it's important.

There are still 7 slots open for the school, walk-ins will be accepted as long as they are there by 9:30.

Having a dad with a racing history who's willing to wrench on a car with you is a helluva deal, Ralph. Don't sell it short and definitely try to make the most of it.

I had a great time yesterday and was very pleased to see everyones performance around the track at the end of the day.

My thanks to Loren for putting together the event and allowing me to pass along a little wisdom to the newbies.
