These classic car commercials fascinate for many reasons. Not only do we get a rundown of the features on these cars and what was important to car buyers in the 1950's, but we also get a glimpse at the 'hard sell' advertising methods commonly used by Madison Avenue in those days. And, obviously, consumers back then had no problem sitting through a two minute commercial, something unheard of in the "short attention span" habits of today's viewers. The cars featured are: 1956-59 Dodge, '56 Chrysler Imperial, '57 Ford models, '58 Edsel, 1950 Mercury and a Kaiser Henry J from the mid-50's. Enjoy.

Announcers all had voice training so that they all sounded the same, regardless of where they came from in the Country. If you listened to a Radio station in California, or one in Alabama, the radio announcer sounded the same. I took a course on Broadcasting, which trained the vocal cords to eventually sound similar to the other announcers. ( I did not complete the course, however). Also, pronunciation of words was vital, each word had to be clear and precise. Words such as "Water" were not " Wata" or "worter", for example. This ability to sound the same anywhere, made it possible for a radio announcer or disk jockey, to work anywhere. Secondly, the sounds back then were not as well recorded as they are today. The recording equipment was Good for the era, but not up to today's standards. Just as what is seen, is black and white television, which was standard. Color was not around as plentiful, and even black and white television was not in every home. Reception was terrible, if a person lived out in the country. There was NO cable, there was only antennas which tried to pick up signals transmitted through the air. So televisions close to a signal did okay, but those far away or behind hills or buildings, the reception was bad.
