wire short

ok, so im leaving discount auto and she doesnt start. i had power to the starter, but i had no power from the starter back. the purple wire was burned, and i removed the wire harness tape back to the fire wall, and replaced that part of the wire. the tan wire on the left side of the starter needed a new eye-hook connector, so i replaced it. the car cranks now, and it will run.BUT! when the car is running, i smell burning wires and see smoke from the starter. and no, the wires arent touching the headers, and they only burn while the car is running, not when the key is in the acessory position. any help on here is greatly appreciated, or coming by to my house is welcome as i will be home at about 4:40 and i will be working on it until she is safe to drive. i really need help on this one guys, i have my grandma's pace car until tomorrow night. and i will need to work sat too.

Find which wire is burning and replace it. It might just be old and oxidized, and as a result, have a billion ohms of resistance. Replace the whole wire, not just a section of it.
